Former Sharks age-group centre Howard Mnisi will play for Griquas in this year’s Currie Cup.

The product of Standerton High School, who turns 24 in July, caught the eye of many in his second Varsity Cup campaign for the NMMU Madibaz; Mnisi was voted the best backline player of the tournament for his exploits in helping NMMU to a maiden semi-final appearance. One person who clearly was impressed – and impressed enough to offer him a Currie Cup contract, was Griquas coach Pote Human.

Mnisi was a member of the Sharks under 19 side that won the competition back in 2008 – the last Sharks age-group to win any silverware – and went on to represent both the under 21s and Vodacom Cup side thereafter. Griquas have contracted him to replace former Lions stalwart Walter Venter, who has called time on his career after suffering a serious knee injury in the Vodacom Cup.
