Francis moves Agen

Forgive the horrible headline pun, I beg, but it seems that Griquas flyhalf Burton Francis is on his way to join recently-relegated French side Agen.

The 26-year-old Paarl pivot has battled to settle since leaving the Bulls at the end of the 2009 season, citing a lack of game time at higher levels after establishing himself as a Currie Cup stalwart in Pretoria. Since then, Francis has amassed an impressive collection of Super Rugby jerseys without ever quite managing to win a regular starting position – he’s played for the Lions (2010-2011), Stormers (2012) and also Cheetahs (2013) since moving on from the Bulls and some have felt it would be only a matter of time before he somehow managed to add a Sharks jersey to his almost-complete pile.

To my mind, though, Francis has always been a far better player than he’s often credited for, showing superb BMT just weeks ago to sink a crucial injury-time penalty to deny the Stormers a much-needed win in Bloemfontein. His reward from Naka Drostke for that effort, though, is one to which he’s become quite accustomed – yet another demotion in favour of other flyhalves.

We’d like to wish Burton all the best for his move to France – hopefully he’ll find a system and a coach that will back him and blieve in him and allow him to thrive. Bon voyage – et bonne chance!

  • I had the feeling that he would not remain with the Cheetahs. Despite a strong showing at every province he played for, he was never the front runner for his jersey. It sometimes feels like some players are allowed all the time in the world to get themselves back in form and as if other players aren’t allowed even one bad game – ala BF. I did at the time also hope that he would manage to get a nice overseas contract based on his strong performances for the Cheetahs. So, I can have some satisfaction from this season afterall!

  • @King Shark (Comment 1) : pretty much sums up my feelings on the guy. He was really solid at Currie Cup level for the Bulls, wasn’t he?

  • @robdylan (Comment 2) : I really appreciated his play at the Lions. Elton was injured and I thought he showed some enterprising play when he finally got an opportunity.

  • @robdylan (Comment 2) : I thought he played better at the Cheetahs than elsewhere. In 2009 at the Bulls, between him and Brummer, they couldn’t buy a kick through the posts. If Steyn didn’t come back from the Boks that year to save them, they would have been nowhere.

  • Also the main reason they bought Jacques-Louis Potgieter back at the end of that year from the Cheetahs. To have consistency at cc level.

  • Burton played well at the Lions as well…
Only issue was he was a bit slow on occasion when running with the ball…

  • The Real Lions vs Somoa game is a great game to watch….
Somoa were physical in the beginning…but the Real Lions kept the ball alive and defended well in the beginning…

Minnie doing everything he usually does without conceding penalties…and actually having a great game…try saving tackles….holding players up for turn overs and carrying the ball very very strong…scoring a hatrick too…

  • I cannot see Somoa being competitive in the winter international series…

    Lions 69 – 14 Somoa

  • The Lions are playing well….but this is a hiding…

If the Lions won I’d say they did not have much time…but this is destruction of Somoa…with their 120kg wings and 138kg props…

Lions looking very fit and fast though…
