Paul Treu has named his squad of 12 players that will battle it out at the Rome Sevens tournament this weekend. This tournament is the final batch of games before the World Cup Sevens tournament later in the month.

This squad is thus a mix of the experienced Sevens players and some potentially game changing players that could make the World Cup squad, including Ryan Kankowski, Ryno Benjamin, Sampie Mastriet and Sibusiso Sithole. These four will have to do particularly well to unseed some regular Sevens players.

Experienced campaigner Kyle Brown will lead the team this weekend. Mark Richards, who has missed a large chuck of the last two seasons due to injury also makes his comeback this weekend as he tries to get a spot in the World Cup squad.

The team to travel to the Roma Sevens is:

1. Ruwellyn Isbell
2. Shaun Adendorff
3. Ryno Benjamin
4. Ryan Kankowski
5. Kyle Brown
6. Stefan Basson
7. Sibusiso Sithole
8. WJ Strydom
9. Hansie Graaff
10. Sampie Mastriet
11. Werner Kok
12. Mark Richards

  • Aaarghhh, c’mon Kanko, pull yourself from this nonsense and get down to your club and play some hard 15 man rugby. You are a potential Bok and I doubt that this airy fairy stuff will help you regain your spot. You need to mix it up and be seen to be mixing it up.

  • I thought I’d hijack this thread quickly rather than posting a new thread and hijacking the whole site just to let you guys know that my time online as commentator or writer on blogs has unfortunately come to an end.

It was important for me to come and say goodbye on my second most loved blog, (the other one is one I own đŸ™‚ ) and thank you all for some wonderful friendships that I have made over the years.

Life has provided me with a magnificent opportunity to become actively involved in rugby again, but given the capacity or rather the employer which is SA Rugby it would be a bit of a conflict of interest if I continue to post rugby opinions in the form of threads.

Of course I will still be around every so often as time allows me to and most of you have my email to stay in touch.

This will be my final week of blogging and I am going to miss this like crazy.

Thanks for all the banter and debate over the years, and of course, as mentioned, the friendships over time which is sure to continue.

As this is my last week as a blogger so I intend to make the most of it and give you Sharks lads and ladies as much kak as I can!

  • @PTAShark (Comment 4) : Maybe its good for him but I doubt it will enhance his chances of showing Plum or Meyer that he is up for a return to their squads. And then there is also the possible mental effect if he also gets cut from the 7s squad.

  • @MornĂ© (Comment 5) : Great stuff that you will be working within rugby at what I presume will be a high level. Congrats.

Enjoy it and reform the buggers where necessary.

  • @Salmonoid the Subtle (Comment 3) : I think this is a smart move on his side. get some spotlight whilst waiting for JS to take the helm and get rid of Plum. Kanko will b back in no this space.

  • @Salmonoid the Subtle (Comment 7) : We know Plum won’t pick him, and Meyer won’t pick him if Plum doesn’t pick him, so I’m glad he’s doing something other than looking for a contract overseas. This keeps him involved in SA rugby, which is damn good.

Plum’s contract is up in October, and with Smit coming in it’s good for Kanko to just keep holding on for a while longer until he knows which way the wind will be blowing coach wise. If Plum stays, there isn’t a huge chance of Kanko staying. If Plum goes, I think Kanko will stay.

  • @PTAShark (Comment 13) : Meyer will pick him if he thinks he is good enough. Meyers choice wont depend on what Plum thinks of the player or he wouldnt have had a closer look at Kanko earlier.

  • @Salmonoid the Subtle (Comment 15) : No im not suggesting plum will pick him, but at least he will make himself avail for the Sharks again in absence of plum. How many coaches in the past have ruined players careers like this? Any prov would rap Kanko up in no time, but he does not really wanna leave Durban, specially with the folks on the south coast. Regarding 7s, I am confident he will make the squad if he has a good tournament in Rome.

  • I hope Kanko makes many glorious line breaks and that he puts any would be defenders on their arses with well timed hand-offs.

  • I think everyone is hoping to get Kanko back in the form he was last year. I just dont know if playing 7s above hard 15 man rugby is the way to do it.
