Cheetahs outside back Nico Scheepers has joined the yearly exodus to Kimberley ahead of the Currie Cup and will be based in Kimberley for the remainder of the season.

Scheepers, who made his name playing for Shimlas in the Varsity Cup, is unlikely to see much Currie Cup game time in Bloemfontein, with the likes of Hennie Daniller and Riaan Smit preferred at fullback – not to mention the slew of good wingers ahead of him in the pecking order.

The loss of Willie le Roux to the Bok cause and Rudi Vogt to injury has opened up a gap at fullback in the Griquas outfit and like le Roux before him, Scheepers will, I’m sure, use the opportunity of game time in the Currie Cup Premier Division to set out his stall in terms of selection at a higher level.

  • Not really an exodus. My understanding is that he is just on loan.

  • @KingCheetah (Comment 1) : the “exodus” refers to the vast numbers of fringe players from other provinces that flock to Griquas ahead of each new Currie Cup season. Not just from the Cheetahs
