The Sharks have just announced that they have secured the services of Brendan Venter as their Director of Rugby.

Coach John Plumtree has also been notified that his contract will not be renewed , the coach is said to be taking a break from the game to freshen up and gain some new ideas after 10 consecutive campaigns.  Brendan Venter will take office for the start of the Currie Cup just after he completes his commitments with the Junior Springboks.,Grant Bashford and Hugh Reece Edwards will remain as support staff

We at Sharksworld would like to thank John Plumtree for his loyal service both  as a player and as a coach and remember fondly some of the highs he has supplied as with over the years, at the same time we welcome Dr Venter to Kings Park and look forward to his contributions.

  • Interesting! Now he better not renew Plum’s contract!

    This could be big.

  • Except the two other clowns are still around.

Fortunately Brendan knows more about back line play that both of those combined – so I can’t see them hanging around the senior team for much longer

  • Will be good to have the man at the helm for the Sharks. he has a very good rugby brain on him.

Director of Rugby, wasn’t that Straueli’s position?

  • Comment 17, posted at 11.06.13 13:47:19 by KingCheetah Reply

  • And another, unrelated question….

No non-Aus sides got bye points in the two rounds( the first one, and the most recent one) only the Aussies played in correct?

So everyone is two rounds behind.

Since the Aus teams miss rounds 18 and 19, only after the 19th Round everybody would have played the same amount of games and byes (except for the Cheetahs, who will have their last bye in round 20).

So effectively (as it stands) any Aus team could be 8-10 points ahead of any non-Aus team until the end of the 19th round. We’ll thus only see the true standings at the end of round 19.

Am I correct, or did I miss something? (Kinda makes the whole ‘four-points-for-a-bye’ idea seem silly)

  • @sharks4eve2013 (Comment 20) : They played round 1 and 17 by themselves. And they will miss rounds 18 and 19.

But what gets me though, nobody else got bye-points for rounds 1 and 17, and the Aussies won’t get bye-points in round 18 and 19.

So the log will only be a fair reflection at the end of round 19. And also, the Cheetahs will get 4 points for their bye in the last round so they have 4 points to bank on.

  • In a way it is sad to see Plum go, he did better than allot of other coaches we have had. I think he needs a two year break and then come back and coach the forwards again. He had a good forward pack when he specialized in the forwards and they way the had to operate on the ground.

  • Comment 68, posted at 11.06.13 15:42:47 by BoerSeun Reply

  • @BoerSeun (Comment 68) : I think Director of rugby has less time to deal one-on-one with the players as he’ll be responsible for implementing playing styles and structures throughout the union.

When HM became DoR at the Bulls, he was heavily involved with Tukkies which translated into a steady flow of talent at age group and CC rugby.

The head coach is in charge of the senior team, no distractions, and he’ll probably be responsible for executing the DoR game plans and styles.

Of course, all this is speculation and only time will tell.
