The Rock

And on this rock I will build my church.

The same can be said about the tighthead. He has to scrum against the loosehead and hooker and is the rock on which scrums are built. At the moment Jannie du Plessis is that rock. We play him come rain or shine, we play him at 60% fitness and we play him for 80min. He is a warrior and team player but we are doing him a disservice… He will break down with the amount of games he has to endure and needs a break.

I was hoping to see him on the bench and the new in form Lourens Adriaanse maybe getting a start. The season is long and he needs to be blooded if heaven forbid Jannie is unable to take part in the Rugby Championship. Coenie Oosthuizen is on the bench as tighthead cover. Why are we taking arguably our best loosehead and trying to convert him? Why is it being done at test match level before he holds down a starting berth as a tighthead at Super 15 level? When ever people mention Coenie’s weakness at scrum time it usually comes when he is at tighthead – at loose head he scrums like a buffalo. He had a neck injury last year, why are we risking him, when he is the future of our scrum? We have seen the damage positional switches have wrought when not managed correctly, John Smit comes to mind.

I hope that poor player management doesn’t see us finish last in the Rugby Championship this year.

  • I have good feelings about RC this season…

  • @Uli (Comment 1) : Are they similar to the ones I have?? kick the ball to Dagg, Smith, Nonu, Ranger, Savea, Digby, Folau, Beale, OConnor and let them run around us??

  • @pienaar111 (Comment 2) : Yeah, we’ll get to see some proper running rugby again….from the opposition. 😈

Stop being negative guys, you are the same people who want PL at FH, but yet he has not been neer as good a MS at FH. I did not see the Sharks have a awesome running style of play with him at FH did we now? I did however see the Bulls score some wonderful tries, with MS at fly-half.

  • @Uli (Comment 4) : That’s all down to who is outside Morne. Pat Lambie is a far better attacking and defending flyhalf. He has been playing in a poorly performing team with an outrageously inconsistent backline outside him with all the injuries. He, thus far, is the only player to have started all of the Sharks’ games this season. Just look at the last few years. He is the future for SA at 10.

  • Yes Jannie needs a break. We got smashed last week when Coenie came on.

  • @PTAShark (Comment 6) : Beast also didn’t exactly cover himself in glory at scrum time. We did better with Nyakane there, even after Castrogiovanni came on.

  • Actually confused as to why Lourens Adriaanse isn’t being used. Jannie for 60 mins then off. Actually, why is he starting these tests anyway? Keep him rested on the bench and get Lourens used to test levels before RC.

  • Beast keeps getting rushed back from injury of which he’s had a few in recent times. And we’re playing Jannie into the ground. He won’t make it to the WC at this rate. We have enough depth if the guys are managed correctly. Otherwise we have fatigued veterans and talent with no caps.

  • @VinChainSaw (Comment 9) : well. and you, troll? losing my mind with HM’s excellent team selections. All we can gripe about is the lack of depth in tighthead.

  • The thing that matters is beating the all blacks. With a weak tighthead they will put us to the sword.

  • There’s good thightheads in SA just use them first in June tests and year-end tour.
