The Sharks are out of action for a while and the rugby world is low on news, so I thought it good to post a general news thread for the day, just to keep you guys busy.
Firstly, the great news for cricket fans is that Dale Steyn is fit to face the West Indies today. We will load a cricket thread for the match, which the Proteas have to win to qualify for a semi-final spot. Do or die, we don’t expect anything less from the Proteas.
Speaking of Do or Die, our national soccer team face Ethiopia in a Soccer World Cup qualifying match this weekend, needing a win to qualify for the big event in Brazil. The boys come off a great 3 – 0 win over CAR and will hope to score a few against Ethiopia and qualify for a second Finals tournament.
Boxing fans would have had a tough morning yesterday, seeing Francois ‘White Buffalo’ Botha getting knocked out in the second round of his bout against Joseph Parker. Botha looked tired after the first 30 seconds against him, and started taking heavy blows from the start of the second round. He wasn’t going to last long and the bout got stopped after Botha fell into the ropes.
Moving on to golf, it is the US Open this weekend. The first round was yesterday, but was heavily effected by rain and some players will only complete their rounds today. As it stands, four South Africans are Even for the round. Charl Schwartzel and Tim Clark have both completed their first rounds at that score while Ernie Els and Branden Grace are through 8 and 7 holes respectively.
If you have any other sport that you would like to discuss, feel free to comment it below.
Enjoy the long weekend!

just a side note . The Proteas need at least a draw to book a place in the semis (i know i know , whats the odds of that happening ?)
However . What this implies is that if the game is rained out (weather not looking to great atm) the Proteas will advance to the semis on a superior net run rate .
@Zibbie (Comment 1) :
Oh awesome! Thanks for clearing that up!
oh you have to be kidding me…. have the wilting flowers choked their way out of another tournament?
@robdylan (Comment 3) : not yet
@war1 (Comment 4) : but wait…..
@war1 (Comment 4) :
Howzit bud!
Long time no see..
Botha should stay away from boxing before he is remembered as the guy with the big mouth but no bite……. if its not too late already.
just a comment on bafana, winning vs Ethiopia does not guarantee them qualification for the big event in Brazil;
they still have botswana next and need to win the group in order to go into a playoffs. Where they will play against another group winner (H&A) to go to Brazil.
As for the playoffs, thats going to be another hectic tie and I shiver thinking about it now.
A young WP team face the Lions at the Coke Tin this afternoon
@Clayton(PJLD) (Comment 9) : Really?
http://www.sharksworld.co.za/2013/06/12/lions-province-named-for-friendly/ 🙂
The white buffalo looks more like a fat cow these days.
@Clayton(PJLD) (Comment 9) :
Should be a good game… for the Lions…
Can’t wait for the curling season to start.
@McLovin (Comment 13) : you going to retire your GHDs?
Marcel Botha fought and won his first professional bout as the undercard of the Francois Botha fight. He is the son of Francois Botha and has had only 1 amateur bout before turning professional.
Does anybody know of any other father and son/s fighting on the same bill.
coming back to the cricket i saw a head line in the pta news paper brove saying sa is known as chokers see they playing i bit of mind games already , just hope they pull it together today. Glad to see steyn back hope he has a cracker today
@Richard Ferguson (Comment 6) : Howzit Rich, I’ve been a bit of a silent observer. Working life doesn’t allow me to comment as much as when I was a student.
@robdylan (Comment 14) : oh dear… 😆
@Salmonoid the Subtle (Comment 15) : no not that i know of the only thing i know is that the klitschko brothers were the first two to be world champions at the same time
@Salmonoid the Subtle (Comment 15) :
SuperSport didn’t show the fight, but I knew it was happening. Glad to hear he won. Hopefully he can have a few bouts in SA..
@sharks4eve2013 (Comment 16) :
Well it doesn’t look like we are going to be watching any cricket today.
Scheduled to start now, but it is raining and it is only expected to clear up at 2pm.
If the game is called off, SA go through on a positive Net Run Rate.
@Richard Ferguson (Comment 21) :
0 – South Africa has never been on the winning side when the game was influenced by weather #First ?
@Zibbie (Comment 22) :
Or it could clear up and SA be bowled out for 45, then we go home.
We wait and see what happens..
@Richard Ferguson (Comment 21) :
That’s bound to happen if you play cricket in Wales. 🙄
@Richard Ferguson (Comment 20) : They did televice it started at 9:30 yesterday morning saw two dwarfs fighting it out as well was funny as hell and if it rains out will be the first for us with the weather helping us in your favour whoop whoop
I refuse to support the Proteas. Too many times have I supported them to be crushed as the favourites choked again. I only have space for one such team in my heart 😳
@Richard Ferguson (Comment 23) :
positive thoughts 😛
@King Shark (Comment 26) : my sentiments exactly.
Helps that I don’t like cricket.
It’s the same reason I have given up pretending to support Liverpool
@Zibbie (Comment 22) : SA beat India in the 1992 world cup in a a rain shortened match – 30 overs each, India 180/6, SA 181/4.
@Salmonoid the Subtle (Comment 29) :
hahah . ok . the first time in 21 years ….
@robdylan (Comment 10) : Ek weet man, just a reminder
Still raining in Cardiff, so a very delayed start in the Cricket.
@Richard Ferguson (Comment 32) : What’s happening in Cardiff? 😉
well looks like it’s game on in cardiff wi won toss and decided to field and looks like the overs reduced to 36 overs
@sharks4eve2013 (Comment 34) :
And then it started raining again..
@Richard Ferguson (Comment 35) : ja got excited for nothing
and they back on the field lets hope the rain stays away
153/3

@Zibbie (Comment 1) :
