Golden Lions lock Jannie Stander has been summoned to join the SA Under 20 squad as they prepare for their IRB Junior World Championship semi-final against Wales tomorrow evening.
Stander, a 20-year-old Phalaborwa native who matriculated at Monument Hoër on the West Rand, replaces the Bulls’ Jannes Kirsten, who suffered multiple facial fractures during a training ground accident. It has not yet been revealed exactly whose fist Kirsten ran into, but it must have been a big one!
In other news, Cheetahs tight head Luan de Bruin has been cleared at a disciplinary hearing and will be available for selection for the semi-final. Coach Dawie Theron will name his team later today. Key among his considerations will be arresting the alarming weaknesses in the side’s set-piece play that were evident against both England and France, as well as settling on a half-back combination.
