Strong Sharks squad for Lions?

Good news, fans – the wait is almost over. The Sharks will be in action against the Lions at Ellis Park on Friday night, in a friendly that will serve to keep both teams sharp for the matches to come.

With a host of players set to make their return from injury for the Sharks in the upcoming weeks, it’s a pretty good bet that the line-up for Friday night’s game will be a strong one, albeit on paper. With the bulk of the “names” in the side having tasted no action for 6 weeks or more, you can bet that there will be plenty of rust on display, with the chances of an upset against the in-form Lions slim. The real prize, of course, will be a far bigger – and hopefully fitter – squad for John Plumtree to select from when the Blues visit Durban next week.

Looking at snaps from the latest training session, a lot of rather encouraging faces appear to be present and accounted for, although it’s not known how many of them will actually be fit for selection on Friday night.

Expect the Sharks to have a squad similar to the following available for selection for the Lions game:

Props: Wiehahn Herbst, Danie Mienie, Dale Chadwick, Allan Dell
Hookers: Craig Burden, Kyle Cooper, Monde Hadebe
Locks: Jandre Marais, Peet Marais
Loose forwards: Keegan Daniel, Jean Deysel, Tera Mthembu, Jacques Botes, Brynard Stander, Francois Kleinhans
Scrumhalves: Cobus Reinach, Charl McLeod, Tian Meyer
Flyahlves: Butch James, Fred Zeilinga
Centres: Heimar Williams, Marius Joubert, Tim Whitehead
Wings: Odwa Ndungane, Sean Robinson
Fullbacks: Louis Ludik, Riaan Viljoen, Gouws Prinsloo

  • Jislaaik, this is still a pretty impressive squad to pick from! Now just hope they come through the game ok. Then we can look forward to finishing the S15 strong again.
PS: Rob did you check the hunger in Bissy on Saturday!?!? That 14min on the field was pretty impressive!

  • @R Hayward (Comment 1) : WOW, yes. Going to be a great rest of the year from him I think.

Hope Heyneke has the balls to start him against Samoa.

  • @robdylan (Comment 2) : Yeah! look I feel sorry for adriaan. He really did a great job! He did everything right from a hooker perspective, BUT ghees Bissy was just awesome in 15min! He is an extra loose on top of doing hooker work! Maybe I’m just a VERY biast sharks fan! and yes cant wait to see him in the black&white again!!!!

  • @R Hayward (Comment 3) : yes adds a lot in the loose, still looked a bit unsure of that knee, but that can be expected. Our starting props were weak.

  • @bobby 26 (Comment 4) : Yeah I must also admit that I was skeptical about that knee and I thought that we might see a “weaker” Bismark on the rugby field when he returned. Only time will tell, but in that 15min stint he was looking awesome again!

  • if they are all fit? The team could look like this.

    01 Chadwick
    02 Cooper
    03 Herbst
    04 Jandre
    05 Peet
    06 Daniel
    07 Deysel
    08 Mtembu
    09 Mcleod
    10 Butch
    11 Ludik
    12 Bosman
    13 Whitehead
    14 Odwa
    15 Viljoen

    16 Burden
    17 Dell
18 Botes (Deysel to cover lock???)
    19 Stander
    20 Reinach
    21 Zeilinga
    22 Robinson

I am trying to think what Plum would do with this squad? there are only 2 locks?? so I can only see Deysel cover lock as he has before, with 2 loose forwards then as cover on the bench.

One would probably find Joubert on the bench in place of Robinson

  • @David12246 (Comment 6) : Plum wont leave out experienced players like Odwa.

Also you can’t play 23 as it is only done in tests and up north Dave.

  • @sharks_lover (Comment 9) : it’s a practice match, they play rolling subs and with approx 26 man squad

  • Comment 10, posted at 17.06.13 12:23:57 by Baylion Reply

  • @sharks_lover (Comment 9) : Actually, it’s just Super Rugby that doesn’t play 23 these days. Unless this match is treated like a warm-up (thus having a 10+ bench), they will probably have an 8-man bench. If I remember correctly, the Currie Cup is going to adopt the 23-man squad this season.

@bobby 26 (Comment 7) : A game we would either do brilliantly in or completely get slaughtered in.

  • Comment 11, posted at 17.06.13 12:29:13 by David12246 Reply

  • @David12246 (Comment 11) : no – I checked that. Currie Cup is still going to be 22 this year.

Stupid, but there you have it.

  • It was encouraging when Bissie came on, Strauss didn’t have the best game, still forsee him finishing this season as no.1.

Pretty keen to see Allan Dell play as well

  • @Ludz (Comment 16) : Strauss cracked under the pressure of having Bismark on the bench. 😈

His so-called leadership skills flew out the window with those little tantrums he threw every time he made a mistake.

His lineout work again sub-par. Ball carrying skill, sub-par. No no, Bismarks made it his Bizzness to show exactly why he is number 1.

  • I must say I reckon our rugby coaches haven’t a clue about the role of an open side flanker. Coetzee is NOT one and neither is Daniel. Why the hell they ever get picked there is beyond me, especially at international level.

Coenie and Bismarck both achieved more turnovers in the 3 minutes after they had come on than Marcell has for two games in total.

  • Genteman, Bissie came on when the Scots were tiring, as much as he made an impact, 1 must ask if he would’ve had the same impact if he started

  • Comment 26, posted at 17.06.13 14:32:24 by Ludz Reply

  • @Ludz (Comment 26) : Time will prove that Bismark is in fact as good as I say he is. He does not base his performance ability on how well the opposition is playing.

Don’t worry, Bismark will keep showing your man Strauss up every week. Strauss is the best thing that could have happened for Bismark’s career. 😉

  • @robdylan (Comment 12) : Rob do you know if Jeandre Marias is also going to stay on with the sharks, what do U think was struali’s plan by letting him Go? Do they expect more from Peet, with Bresler, Stef! I just feel letting Botes or one the the other older fringe flanks go we could have used Marias, Bresler and Stef on flank and lock and created more depth in the team.

  • Comment 33, posted at 17.06.13 17:57:44 by BoerSeun Reply

  • @Dancing Bear (Comment 32) : he’s just got back from the sevens in Rome – and remember he’s been released to them until after the World Cup at the end of the month.

I think Kanko already won the war, mate. No point in going back to fight the last battle with Plum

  • @BoerSeun (Comment 33) : well, you have to bear a few things in mind. Marais is coming out of contract in October and the decision to move on, as far as I can tell, came form his side, not the Sharks. So it wasn’t that Rudolf had any choice in the matter, per se, other than whether to let him go a few months early.

Jandre is leaving because Plum didn’t back him. I don’t think we can really make it any plainer than that.

  • Great to see the Sharks aren’t wasting the opportunity by sending a mediocre side. Although largely experimental this team should make for a good match and will test the Lions defence.

Will be interesting to see how Ludik shapes at #13
