Another spurious French link for Bismarck

Reports have surfaced this morning linking Bismarck du Plessis to a big money move to French club Toulon. As far as we can tell, there’s no substance to this story at all.

While it is true that neither Bismarck nor brother Jannie have yet renewed their Sharks contracts, we need to remember that both were recently offered – and accepted – Springboks contracts. As we saw with the likes of JP Pietersen, Morne Steyn, Juandre Kruger and so on, Heyneke Meyer is only interested in contracting players who are committed to playing their domestic rugby in the country. This will, I’m sure, have been a binding stipulation in the contracts.

Bismarck, in other words, cannot go to France without losing his Bok contract. To turn around and sign a contract with Toulon after giving assurances to the national coach that he will stay in the country, would also be enough of an act of bad faith, I’m sure, to ensure that Meyer never picks him again.

That’s not the sort of guy Bismarck is. We remain positive that both Bismarck and Jannie will renew with the Sharks just as soon as the dust has settled there and they are able to have a proper sit down with John Smit and Brenden Venter.

  • Hmmm, maybe not France, but could he be on his way somewhere….
The Sunday Times (or was it Rapport) got me thinking this weekend when Bissie was quoted that he and Jannie are a package deal.

  • Quite a nothing story this. Bismark won’t leave after having spent a year recovering. He’ll sign with the Sharks.

  • @robdylan (Comment 14) : Rob my little brother says Jacques Du Plessis is a Shark at HEART…PONGOLA Farm Boy, sounds like he went to Ermelo High School, Stonehouse use to Coach there when we played them at school…maybe we can also bait him back to his SHARKLAND!! HE has been impressive. I still Rate the Du Preez Brothers above him, they seem a bit more like a Bakkies+DANIE mix with Bob Skinstad, then just Matfield+Bekker in Du Plessis’S case. Any way these young Boys in sOUTH aFRICA NOW are very exciting to watch.

I also heard the Bulls are younster hunting as if they don’t have enough talents, they are Hooker/Scrum Half Hunting as backup to Vissagie, hope they don’t poach our youngsters. Also looking for a scrum half.

After last year as a old MATIE seeing a lot of Sharks Boys applying there trade to ‘Tuks’…I hated the idea of our talent leaving shark land due to lack of opportunities in varsity cup AND Vodacom Rugby. Lets Hope Venter ‘Muir’ & ‘RASSIE’ changes this 🙂 NO news on any youngsters moving?

  • @robdylan (Comment 25) :

Sevens nationally should be rethink-ed, as we as Varsity and Vodacom Rugby’s Role in the Union.

Rob I think the first thing to have a Good look at is Priority of the Vodacom Cup and Varsity Cup. We need a loan system or to link up with a university to ensure our boys get exposure on that level, or try and enter the Rugby ACADEMIES into the Systems, have them play a tournament where 2 academy team qualify for the Varsity Cup.

secondly And we should not sign a player ‘of experience/age’ if he can not with ease make the Super Rugby team, rather bleed the youngsters into the system, at a cost of loosing if it should be SO…

Thirdly its been 16 years of Sevens Rugby, that’s been where players have been discovered all over the Country. whey cant we have Sevens games as Warm up GAMES that are also broadcast before every Match…what better exposure is there? it would give us all a indication of what 7’s players a just not looked at because True has his Fav Boys to Punt. I can just emagine pitching up to a Match an hour early to see Western Province with Cheslin Cholbe playing the Bulls with Kriel(Both not even on the bench for there unions) or Louis Ludik returning from injury with a sevens game to sharpen up his one on one contact and skills, this team must have priority above under 20 rugby and be a big part or the event of visiting a game, and regarding entertainment value it speaks for itself, I would love to tune in and get an idea of what a player can do if given the opportunity, is there a more individual challenge than standing up in a sevens game.

It Just makes Rugby Sense and Commercial Sense.

We beat DHS, Waterkloof, MONNAS, mIDDLEBURG AND eRMelo back in our day, WE had 5 teams. we beat college in our Rugby week was such a proud ‘of rugby’ School as was Pionier- I just heard things were not the same any more…the union doesn’t give the talent that is to far away a chance even the Town Side who where Murry Club Champs back then don’t get support anymore like they use to. very sad to hear if this is true….and then the Pretoria Schools are pouching our Northern KZN(nEWCASTLE, lADY sMIT, dUNDEE, vRYHEID, PONGOLA) boys like crazy even some in Paul Roos Stellenbosch – maybe its the trends of School Rugby nowadays…Afrikaans maybe also plays a big role. @The Hobbit (Comment 30) : @Salmonoid the Subtle (Comment 27) :

And then he wont sign because his brother didnt get a contract. Then he’s suur because he has to play behind the great man Johnn Smit. Then he’s off, then he’s not.

Dont for one second think he hasnt put it out there that he would be interested.

I’m just tired of him – and his brother.

Just leave so that we can all move on without you. And find some players that dont give away a million yellow cards a seaosn.

He’s anyway not the best hooker in the country, so why bother with him? If Toulon want him, then they can have him. Him and Bakkies can compete to see who can give away the most yellow cards.
