Hewitt to add second-row depth

Griquas lock Edwin Hewitt has been released by the central union and arrived in Durban yesterday, hopeful of securing a Sharks contract.

With a second-row injury crisis robbing the Durban side of lock options ahead of the Currie Cup season, Hewitt will add much-needed depth to the squad, but will apparently have to prove his fitness before being contracted, initially just until the end of the year.

The Sharks have lost the services of Anton Bresler and Pieter-Steph du Toit to injury, with neither set to be available for another 2-3 months, while Franco van der Merwe and Jandre Marais will both move on after Super Rugby, to Bordeaux and the Lions respectively. Marais’ younger brother, Peet, is also currently battling injury, but this is understood to not be too serious.

The crisis should see Jean Deysel start at lock alongside Jandre Marais when the Sharks take on the Lions on Friday, with Hewitt perhaps coming into the selection frame for next weekend’s clash against the Blues.

Sharksworld aims to catch up with Edwin for a chat later today.

  • Good move from The Sharks. He’s a physical number 4 and i have always liked the way he plays. I’m happy with this.

  • @JJR (Comment 7) : @robdylan (Comment 8) : Another sign of positive change….under the “old regime”, the Sharks wouldn’t have considered anyone under the age of 30. 😈

  • 😯 According to Wikipedia, Mr Hewitt last played provincial rugby in 2011, and that was 1 game for SWD, prior to that he played 32 games for Griguas.

    Can these stats be right.

  • @JJR (Comment 21) : @robdylan (Comment 22) : 1.96 is even still a bit short for a lock, but it’s better than 1.94.

Personally I’d prefer 1.98 as an entry level height for a lock.
