Lambert to face former team mates

Anyone remember Lambert Groenewald? The big flanker was a stalwart for the Sharks at age-group level, before being mysteriously cut from the senior ranks after a solitary Super Rugby appearance, back in 2011.

Weighing in at an impressive 110kg plus, Lambert seemed on course to develop into a natural long-term replacement for the likes of Jean Deysel and Willem Alberts in the Sharks back row, but like so many other young players at the time, he fell foul of the, shall we say, “selection vagaries” of the Sharks coaching side and left for Italy not long after his 5-minutes of Super Rugby glory, which came as a replacement against the Blues at Kings Park. At least Lambert can say that he’s never lost a senior match for the Sharks!

Anyway, having spent a few years on the club scene in Italy and Spain, Lambert has returned to South Africa to take up a contract with the Golden Lions and he’ll be on the bench for them on Friday as they take on his former team mates in a friendly. With both Deysel and new “wrecking ball” Bry Stander in the Sharks ranks, you can rest assured that the new Lion will have plenty of points to prove should he make it onto the park.

A number of other former Sharks will turn out for the Lions, with prop Julian Redelinghuys and scrumhalf Ross Cronje both given starts this week. Warren Whiteley (another former Shark) is not in the side this time around, meaning the captaincy duties pass back to JC Janse van Rensburg, who of course also played for the Sharks this year.

Lions: 15 Chrysander Botha, 14 Ruan Combrinck, 13 Stokkies Hanekom, 12 Alwyn Hollenbach, 11 Anthony Volmink, 10 Marnitz Boshoff, 9 Ross Cronje, 8 Willie Britz, 7 Derick Minnie, 6 Warwick Tecklenburg, 5 Hugo Kloppers, 4 Hendrik Roodt, 3 Julian Redelinghuys, 2 Francois du Toit, 1 JC Janse van Rensburg (captain).
Replacements: 16 Robbie Coetzee, 17 CJ van der Linde, 18 Gavin Annandale, 19 Lambert Groenewald, 20 Michael Bondesio, 21 Dylan des Fountain, 22 Deon van Rensburg.

  • Ag née moer man, I forgot about this boy is was excellent and we also let him go, I am going to have to start supporting the lions . Ackers obviously knows his pool of players well. Sharks coaching staff have a look around of what you have done. Next player to make it big at another union is Jeandre Marais…been following Lambert from school, and I was super excited when he joined the sharks…and just to mention his bigger faster and more skilled than d
Densel and Alberts, I shit you knot.

We can’t keep all young talents but we should have invested game time and money in Marias, Kriel Boys, Pat HOward, Groenewalt, Combrinck, Fisher, Majola the list goes on and on….but I can’t think of any more now 😉 can anyone think of more youngsters who left?
