Sharks XV fullback Gouws Prinsloo will play for Griquas in this year’s Currie Cup

After limited exposure at senior level, despite being a stalwart in the under 21 and Vodacom Cup ranks, Prinsloo has been drafted into the Griquas squad to provide cover at flyhalf and fullback, both positions in which the Kimberley side lacks depth. Griquas have also contracted former WP and Bok lock, Hilton Lobberts, to strengthen their engine room.

The willingness to release Prinsloo makes one wonder whether the Sharks have managed to retain the services of Louis Ludik for the Currie Cup season, after the latter was linked with a move to Agen in France. The Sharks will apparently confirm which players have been re-contracted on 1 July.

  • Perhaps they targeting Willie le roux, although I don’t see him leaving the cheetahs for another Sa team when he’s given carte blanch to play how he wants at the cheetahs. Hopefully the sharks play an attacking game under Brendan venter cause Saracens were commonly regarded as being a boring team…

  • @RuckingFun (Comment 1) : I’m sure they are targeting him, but as you say, so is everyone else.

  • @GreatSharksays (Comment 3) : no, I don’t. Nobody is saying anything.

That’s probably not unexpected, though, since he’s not allowed to receive any offers until 1 July.

  • I’m going with the hunch that this is a tit for tat for Slick Willie.

  • @Big Fish (Comment 5) : You reckon Gouws is part of the payout to the Griquas for Willie? 😀

  • Forgive me, it is Monday.

From the article, I can not make out whether this is a loan deal for CC only, or a permanent thing. Since there is no mention of a loan, I am assuming it is permanent, but some parts make it sound like a loan

  • @Die Kriek (Comment 9) : no, it’s permanent.

  • Where does that leave us in terms of depth in the 15 position? if Ludik goes, do we shove Steyn back into FB or even Lambie? Willie would be a good acquisition if we can but then who plays bench warmer? Him or Ludik? OHHHH MY HEAD HURTS WITH ALL THIS ON A MONDAY….

  • Although I like Willie, I believe Ludick has proven over and over again that he is the Sharks best 15. Ludick will probably only slot in at 13 until Whitehead, Jordaan and Steyn is fit. I also don’t believe we need to sign a replacement for Bosman as Williams and Zeilinga offer capable cover.

  • @RuckingFun (Comment 1) : Willie’s soul will get broken at the Sharks. Its best he keeps on playing the freestyle game at the Cheetahs

  • So the Sharks lose two fullbacks with Ludik to Agen and Gouws to Griquas. Riaan Viljoen and Francois Steyn the only options left.

  • @Spanky (Comment 16) : Ludik to Agen is not confirmed and I really doubt they would be releasing Gouws if Ludik was going.

  • @Spanky (Comment 20) : yes, I know… but that’s kind of how the French do it. They certainly believe they have signed him, but it will all be subject to release and all that stuff and quite frankly, i don’t think the Sharks will let him go.

  • Talent, Jesse was probably offered a contract by Sharks last year, doubt he’s fed up with the Bulls already. 😆

  • Comment 22, posted at 24.06.13 19:39:09 by Ludz Reply

  • Rob I really hope Sharks can keep Ludik. Don’t know if Gouws was a long term answer at 15, maybe if he gets more chances with Griquas.

  • Pity….actually rated him. We have ‘produced’ and let go a few fullbacks now….De Kock, Kriel and Prinsloo.
