Plenty loosies – fewer centres

The Sharks look set to be bolstered by a host of returning Boks ahead of this weekend’s Super Rugby clash with the Blues at Kings Park. While their options in the loose trio are set to expand rapidly, depth concerns in midfield and the second row continue to confound selection.

The Sharks website has quoted Grant Bashford – who appears to have taken over as spokesman for the coaching team – as saying that Louis Luydik is likely to retain the number 13 jersey, after a great maiden showing in that position against the Lions on Friday night. With Patrick Lambie back in the fold and Heimar Williams also impressing in his first senior start, there appear to be a number of options in the 10-12 channel, although no information has yet come to light regarding Butch James’ fitness. The stalwart enjoyed a good half for the Sharks against the Lions, but unfortunately left the field injured early in the second period.

The smart money would, I’m sure, be on James partnering Ludik in midfield, if fit, with Williams the bench option. Meyer Bosman has undergone surgery and with a departure to Stade Francais now confirmed, appears to have played his last match for the Sharks. Tim Whitehead continues to battle for fitness and will now apparently only return for the Currie Cup season. Lwazi Mvovo is the other Bok back set to be included, at the likely expense of left wing Sean Robinson.

Up front, the Sharks have been strengthened everywhere bar the second row, with the injury to Jandre Marais added to those suffered by Anton Bresler and Pieter-Steph du Toit before the break. Franco van der Merwe will no doubt partner new boy Edwin Hewitt in the middle of the scrum, with one of Willem Alberts or Jean Deysel asked to play the back-up role. The Sharks will then further need to decide how to compose a loose trio, given the availability of Marcell Coetzee, Ryan Kankowski, Alberts, Deysel, Tera Mtembu, Brynard Stander and, of course, captain Keegan Daniel.

  • Is Tyler Fisher a midfield option yet?

  • @TheGoose (Comment 3) : you tell me…. what did you think of his game on Friday?

it was unfortunate that he had no ball to play with. To me, he looked up for the contest, although still a bit raw. I wouldn’t throw him into Super Rugby yet, but I think he should get Currie Cup gametime.

  • 😈 What about Marius Joubert in centre channel 👿 Sorry to have ruined everyone’s day 😆 Jokes aside, what is the extent of Butch’s injury?Has Mvovo recovered sufficiently? What about a Robinson/Williams/Ludik partnership? Hasn’t Viljoen played centre before for Griqua’s/Cheetahs?

  • I liked the look of Hewitt. Seems like a big lad that is willing to play his way into the team. I would like a loose trio of Deysel(c), Alberts and Kanko, with Terra on the bench and Marcell given time to rest and Keegan needs time to re-evaluate himself

  • Random question, do you know whether the KO Kid worked out in the end? Or didn’t he (luckily) quit his day job?

  • @bokbok (Comment 10) : I dunno….last I heard he’d left Durban and headed to Pretoria. Why they would need yet more centres is beyond me.
