The Sharks have named a strong side to face the Blues in Saturday’s Super Rugby match at Kings Park.

Keegan Daniel captains the side from the number 8 jersey as part of an all-Bok back row, with Willem Alberts and Marcell Coetzee starting on the flanks. Edwin Hewitt will start his first Super Rugby match at lock, alongside Franco van der Merwe, with Bok props Beast Mtawarira and Janne du Plessis also returning to the fray.

Hooker Bismarck du Plessis will make his first appearance of the season off the bench, with Kyle Cooper starting in the number 2 jersey.

Butch James and Louis Ludik, as predicted, are the centres, with Pat Lambie and Lwazi Mvovo coming back in from the Bok squad. Charl McLeod, Odwa Ndungane and Riaan Viljoen remain from the line-up that featured against the Lions.

Some interesting selections have been made on the bench. Jandre Marais has made somewhat of a miraculous recovery after initially being ruled out and he will cover the second row. Wiehahn Herbst may too recover in time, but has been bracketed with Danie Mienie on the bench, Jacques Botes and Jean Deysel will both provide back row cover, with Ryan Kankowski again out in the cold, along with Tera Mtembu,

Young utility back Jaco van Tonder looks set to earn a first cap, named as one of only two back replacements along with Cobus Reinach.

  • Good team, looking patchy at center though! And still no Kanko?

  • Not a bad team, pity Kanko is over looked again, or maybe still injured?

Jandre I was assured was a NO NO, miracle recovery I guess, Herbst? well if he is fit this is a huge plus for the Sharks.

Must say a little surprised at Bismark not Starting? Backline is pretty much as expected

  • Bloody good lineup…. says a lot for the squad that guys like Kanko, Peet Marais, Mtembu, Williams, Robinson, etc can’t get a look in this week

  • @sharks_lover (Comment 3) : sorry to say it, but the fact that Jandre is now clear to play after being definitively ruled out 2 days ago makes me even more worried about the situation.

Maybe it’s not even him? Maybe it’s Peet and they just got the name wrong?

  • @robdylan (Comment 7) : Yeah Rob, it is pretty dire when it come to Locks right now for us.

I would have gone with Alberts to cover lock and started Deysel who for me is not getting recognition for the supurb form he has shown. Last week he stood head and shoulders above any other loosy for the Sharks, hitting rucks with menace and tackling like crazy, and again strong in the ball carry and turning Lions ball over to win possession.

  • I’m sure he will. Enough quality ball to work with will increase his confidence. I just think that he kinda got dealt a bad hand.

  • I see absolutely no reason why Bismarck du Plessis did not start. The guy has played in 2 test matches. He’s ready! Otherwise, good team (aside from perhaps the Kankowski issue).

Anyway… we can still make the play-offs mathematically if the Crusaders lose all of their matches and we get 15 points in our last 3.

Andre Esterhuizen is in his first year out of school. Not ready for Super Rugby.

  • My only problem with our team is the lack of a fetcher, and we have seen how it comes back to bite a team in the @ss

the closest we have to a fetcher it Bismark and Deysel, Bosman and Botes also turn some ball over.

If we look at our loose trio not one really fetchers or SLOWS down ball effectively.

  • What is the use of a medical update press release from the Sharks if it isn’t worth the paper it is written on? Marais suddenly ready? They haven’t got a clue do they.

Kankowski was never going to be selected. That would he been to blatant an “up yours” from Bashford and co to Plumtree.

  • Kanko should be there with Alberts at 7 and Keegan at 6.

Coetzee has been so average this year. Suffering from ‘Headless chicken’ disease coupled with ‘second year’ syndrome. He needs to be dropped completely with Tera on the bench.

Terrible side all in all actually. Blues by 20.

Definitely. Our backline hasn’t looked as fluent the whole year as it did last weekend.
Butch takes it up flat and I don’t think there is a better distributing flyhalf in the country.

    Lambie will learn plenty.

  • @Uli (Comment 31) : Yeah he has regressed on attack unfortunately, which is why I hope part of Smit’s plan is to bring in some specialised coaching in that area. Part of it is incorrect alignment, and Butch at 12 will no doubt be helping him out there on sat.

  • Comment 33, posted at 27.06.13 14:52:28 by neilster Reply

  • We actually have too many talented loose forwards when they’re all back from injury! Shame Marcell, Keegan and apparently Kanko are not playing their best.

I think Keegan needs to step down from captain until he gets his game back. He was great last season but he’s just so off form. Maybe the removal of the pressure of captaincy will help? And to be honest he has also made some shocking decisions as captain.

  • I fucking HATE THE SHARKS…not team can piss off their fans more than this bunch. Keegan Daniel still in the starting team is disgraceful. YOU CANNOT JUSTIFY HIS SELECTION AHEAD OF ANY OF THE GUYS ON THE BENCH (and that other fella who isn’t even on the bench). His performances have been awful and his leadership woeful.

Coetzee has been shit (bucket loads better than Daniel though) all season and never gets dropped. You cannot justify someone’s selection if they have 5 or more poor performances in 1 16 game season.

Player favouritism, poor coaching, poor selections, poor tactics, poor player management. One of the worst run pro sports clubs I have seen.

Junior players making their debuts out of position…at this level…

Picking anyone and everyone except local talent…PISS POOR

    What did I miss???

    ….vent over

You dont play players out of position in the first game at senior level…or drop them when the whole team was shit (Sithole). You give them a go and you give them a fair go

Keegan and Marcell can play shit the whole year and not get dropped yet others get 2-3 games and gets dropped!!!!! With the team for Saturday it seems as if the plumplan is still going strong.
