Sharks winger Lwazi Mvovo earns a 50th Super Rugby cap this week as he returns to the side to take on the Blues.

The Sharks have received an additional experience boost in the form of centurions Jacques Botes (111 caps) and Bismarck du Plessis (100 caps), both of whom will play off the bench this week. Along with Jean Deysel (51 caps), they’ll add a hard edge to a replacement unit that otherwise contains relative greenhorns in Cobus Reinach (10 caps), Jandre Marais (9 caps), Danie Mienie (1 cap) and debutant Jaco van Tonder.

The starting team boasts huge experience, though, with Jannie du Plessis (111) and Odwa Ndungane (102) the centurions, along with a slew of men who have already reached the 50 cap mark: Beast Mtawarira (85), Franco van der Merwe (86), Willem Alberts (82), Keegan Daniel (93), Charl McLeod (52), Louis Ludik (63) and Butch James (69). James earned 16 Super Rugby caps for the Lions, but earned the last of his 53 Sharks caps back in 2007. The only debutant in the starting line-up is lock Edwin Hewitt.

The team as named boasts a total of 1218 caps at Super Rugby level, an average of a little over 55 caps per man.

  • @ChrisS (Comment 7) : he’s been with us all the way through. Joined the Academy in 2010 after matriculating at Outeniqua, where he played mostly flyhalf, but also some fullback. Played Craven week for SWD two years running and made the SA under 18 elite squad in 2008.

Since then has played under 19, under 21 and Vodacom Cup rugby for the Sharks, mostly at fullback and sometimes at wing. Has scored 168 points in those competitions including 21 tries.

  • @robdylan (Comment 8) : @Uli (Comment 13) : Van Tonder I think will pitch up if given the chance, he is a very solid player never plays Badly but the day that he is on, hes fantastic to watch.was a very good flyhalf Honiball/Larkham MIX look to him with ball in hand. he use to drift up to the defense like larkam-does it the entire game and then breaks with huge pace…very glad that this boy is here…Just one thing, where is Robinson? I love giving this bloke a chance but where is the consistency Robinson needs more game time. and needs Ball on the front foot from a solid PACK effort. And one more observation why not play the incumbents now..we are essentially knocked out, lets get the gamble on. Even Du Preez could of got a 15min Run. with LAMBIE AT 12, lUDIK AT 13, Ndungane also needs to look at GIVING OVER THE reins. there is just to much young guns on the wings. think 2014 should be his swan song. Is Luther OBI joining the Sharks from the leopards? I think he has more positives than Senatla in the long run. And all Province fans on sharks World, there is huge crap in Province at the moment…some juicy stuff going to surface over the next few months…..eina WP!!! eINA!

  • @Uli (Comment 18) : Depends on what you have vested in him. i Saw a interview on reunoin where two players had a chat about Ben Smith and his lack of confidence. And how Wyne Smith worked with him to chainge that. then you have a Corey Jane who has always believed he is the Best All Black off all time. It just depends on what you have around you to Back you thinking/Believing/Claims. If a player is Given a chance to play and the coach or the players believe is folly, he is going to perform folly. I just think the youngsters are playing in a team without momentum/trust/surety, expecting them to achieve in such surroundings isn’t going to materialize. That’s why players from the Bulls, Crusaders and more resent(before this dud year) Sharks have always been producing good youngsters. they had solid base to walk into. A winning Culture a team of positive senior players…I jsut speculate that we need these boys to feel that before hitting the field. and at the moment they are just individually trying to secure some sense of propose in the team. Just a [email protected]robdylan (Comment 19) : Rob is Robinson a wing or a Fullback. I hoped he was a fullback would explain a lot of player moves at the sharks.
