Sharks v Blues – the good, the bad and the unkown

Looking at the Sharks side named to take on the Blues tomorrow, there are a fair few positives coming through, as well with areas that either cause concern – or are simply unknown at this stage. Let’s have a look.

The Good

  • There’s a lot of experience in the team and some good signs that the injury pendulum is starting to swing back the other way. With some big names coming back into the fray and the bulk of the “hard men” now back in the engine room, it’s looking good up-front at least.
  • There’s a fair bit of continuity, with the pack showing just one change to the outfit that ran out against the Bulls and the backline just two. That should hopefully mean that it doesn’t take long for the players to “find each other”.
  • Bismarck. He may only be playing off the bench this week, but we’ve missed him and he’s sure to add a huge amount in the closing stages of what may be a tight game.
  • The addition of Butch James adds plenty of options on attack. He managed the game very well from flyhalf when the Sharks played the Lions and by varying the first receiver – as well as alignment of the backs, the Sharks should be less predictable. James also adds another solid tactical boot.
  • Louis Ludik is back. He’s been possibly the best attacking back for the Sharks this season when he’s played and he looked superb at outside centre, against an admittedly porous Lions midfield, last week.
  • Another good young back – Javo van Tonder – is being given a chance to stake a claim. It’s far better for the overall health of the system to give these young guys a chance, than to constantly rely on imports.

The Bad

  • Keegan Daniel somehow retains his place at number 8; there’s thus no room for either Ryan Kankowsi or Tera Mtembu in the squad. Hard to justify Keegan’s continued selection on current form.
  • Jannie du Plessis is forced to start as the result of Herbst’s injury and a lack of tighthead depth. It would be ideal to manage the big man’s workload a bit better.
  • We’re going to miss Pieter-Steph du Toit and his huge physical contribution.

Let’s end of with the things that we don’t know at this stage, but will hopefully have some clarity on after the game.

The Unknown

  • Edwin Hewitt had an encouraging debut against the Lions, but will need to step up several gears in his first Super Rugby game. Will he prove a decent number 4 option at this level?
  • Louis Ludik is untried at centre and will face a baptism of fire, defending against the pacy and unpredictable Blues backs. How will he come through this challenge?
  • Does Jaco van Tonder have what it takes to succeed in Super Rugby? This will be a big, big game for a youngster who’s not yet earned even a Currie Cup cap.
  • Butch James and his dodgy knees continue to defy the odds. Will he still be able to last the pace? What happens if he is forced off early, with no centre cover in the 22?

What do you think, guys? You agree with these? What, if anything, have I missed?

  • Pity no Kankowski – that would have been a good move. Lets just see what happens.

  • I dont know if its just me imagining it but if you look at last years super rugby final and semi final you would see that Ludik often defended on center, while JP attacked on center…. And judging on his performance against the lions i dont really think he is untried in this position…??

  • @sway (Comment 3) : I guess not, Sway… just that this is his first start, at Super Rugby level, in that jersey.

  • @sway (Comment 3) : Well last weekends game against the lions he was SUPER at center mate. He broke the line 4 times or something of that sort in the first half.

  • I think the of field politics and background changes might be the biggest determining factor for this game – I hope the boys realise that they’re all playing for their future at the Sharks and impressing the new DoR and coach starts this Saturday.

I think Keegan’s continued inclusion and captaincy will also affect the team morale.

  • I like this team, and although I’m a huge Keegan fan, I must agree that his form has not been there of late, and hopefully he uses this game to turn that around. I really feel for Kanko though, and it shows our glut of quality loosies that we cant find a place for him, would of loved to have seen him back on the park.

  • Unless Kanko is injured, I might not change my animosity towards the Sharks. Sick and tired of the beautiful let down syndrome and positively choking on the political machinations that kept Kanko out but assured Keegan’s participation.

  • @robdylan (Comment 18) : perhaps not a bad thing. let him do the hard yards for a game or two. perhaps join the squad for the match against the Kings and onto CCup then and become a full time member of the squad again. Will benefit Sharks specially if he does not make HM squad

  • If Butch James has to go off early. Lambie to inside centre, Riaan Viljoen to flyhalf, Ludick to fullback and Jaco will have to come on at outside centre.

  • If Butch goes off, Lambie to 12, Viljoen to 10, van Tonder to 15 (he’s a fullback right?).
