Try-time for Kanko as Rovers run riot

Discarded Sharks eighthman Ryan Kankowski finally enjoyed some rugby over the weekend, helping himself to one of the 13 tries scored by College Rovers in their one-sided 81-18 win over Maritzburg Collegians.

There really is a glut of good loose forward talent in the province, with another who should be playing for the Sharks, Tera Mtembu, also impressing for Rovers. Both he and Kankowski featured off the bench, as did the latter’s younger brother, Jason.

With the older Kankowski brother clearly fit and available for selection, it surely MUST be time for Sharks coaches Hugh Reece-Edwards and Grant Bashford to re-introduce him to the Super Rugby side, given the poor form of current number 8 Keegan Daniel. The continued omission of this star player on the flimsiest of pretexts has now gone beyond a joke and is rapidly turning into a real PR nightmare for the Sharks.

  • Would be great to play Kanko now; but with him not around for Currie Cup i would rather play Tera at 8.

  • @Big Fish (Comment 4) : ja, exactly. The guy is a big part of the plans going forward – clearly – and you would think it would be better for the Sharks for him to be involved in Meyer’s RC squad than to be faffing around in the Jap second division.

  • @robdylan (Comment 7) : Rob – you need to remember that Kanko returned from Japan completely out of shape with his conditioning (strength and fitness were way down from last year) a serious problem. Even the SA Sevens coaching staff saw that.

I do however agree that Keegan Daniel should go – he is a negative influence on the team right now, he is playing extremely poorly. With Deysel, Botes, Alberts, Coetzee, Daniel and Kanko – we need to lose one off the bench. My choice would be Daniel to go.

  • I actually feel quite bad for Keegan. When we look at his current situation with human eyes (and not as sports fanatics) we’ll realise that he played his heart out last year obviously with a hope of becoming a Springbok.

He reached that goal but was dropped from the Boks squad so quickly, his head probably still hurts. All that after Keegan was assured by lying HM of a shot against Oz (etc. etc. can’t remember all the details, but the treatment Keegan received from HM is no different to that which Lambie is going through right now, and his from has dropped off quite a bit too).

This year Keegan plays a mixture between trying to hard and flipping off the Springbok head coach, and it has become what we see today.

I don’t think we realise the impact not being selected fro the Boks has on a player doing everything and more to make the Boks team.

This also exposes the need for a head doctor at the Sharks, to help our boys get over the disappointment.

Still no denying though, the time has come to – Make Bismarck captain.

  • @FireTheLooser (Comment 11) : what do you think chances are that english players get marginalised at springbok level? Im not saying anything. Just asking. Think back to Stegmann ahead of Keegan. Out of form Steyn over Grant. Krusty over Joe P. Whitehead on fire never even invited to camp. Probably just talking shite.Make Bismarck captain

  • @West Indies Cricket Board (Comment 6) : it would mean we won 8 of the 15 games we played which makes it a pass. Need to get back to the level where the pass rate for the Sharks is 75%. Anyway, Kanko should be given a chance especially with Keegan low on form. Make Bismarck captain.
