Young Bulls for Lions

The Lions continue their preparations for the Promotion / Relegation match against the lowest finishing Super Rugby franchise (Kings) by playing against a young Bulls team this weekend. The Bulls will use this opportunity to give their young guns a run before the Currie Cup season, while two stalwarts return from injury.

Centre Francois Venter and prop Marcel van der Merwe both start their first matches following long term injury lay-offs, surrounded by a mix of young exciting talent and fringe players who are outside Super Rugby selection.

Joining van der Merwe in the front row is Willie Wepener, the third choice hooker who has had limited game time, but will add experience to a young team on the day. The loose forwards of Jean Cook, Jacques du Plessis and Shaun Adendorff make for an exciting trio. Handre Pollard starts the match at flyhalf, outside Rudy Paige, who played Super Rugby for the Bulls last weekend against the Kings.

The returning Venter is joined by Ulrich Beyers in midfield, while both Junior Springbok centres Rohan Janse van Rensburg and Dries Swanepoel sit on the extended bench. The back three of Travis Ismaiel, Jesse Kriel and Clayton Blommetjies promise attacking rugby from the back.

The Bulls’ other flyhalf option for the Currie Cup also sits on the bench, Tony Jantjies waiting for his turn to represent. While we reported earlier in the week that Willie du Plessis is likely to be involved with the Currie Cup team, his exclusion is a concern.

Blue Bulls: 15 Clayton Blommetjies, 14 Jesse Kriel, 13 Ulrich Beyers, 12 Francois Venter, 11 Travis Ismaiel, 10 Handré Pollard, 9 Rudy Paige, 8 Jean Cook, 7 Jacques du Plessis, 6 Shaun Adendorff, 5 Dennis Visser, 4 Schalk van Heerden, 3 Marcel van der Merwe, 2 Willie Wepener, 1 Dawie Steyn.

Substitutes: 16 Bongi Mbonambi, 17 Hencus van Wyk, 18 Christof Gouws, 19 Irne Herbst, 20 Roelof Smit, 21 Ruan Snyman, 22 Tony Jantjies, 23 Dries Swanepoel, 24 Rohan Janse van Rensburg.

  • I read all your articles and have been part of this site for about 2-3 years…. I cant believe you guys are so against the Lions. Not one article about the Lions and when they beat a strong Sharks team no credit was given for a Young Lions team playing some great rugby at the moment. I wonder if the fact that we beat the Sharks nerly everytime they visit Ellis Park has anything to do with it…… Well I cant wait for the Lions to beat the Kings in PR and then take the CC to quite down all the critics…… Lions to win Saterday by 20+

I actually think we had a pretty good match report about the Lions’ win over the Sharks in that friendly match, as well as coverage of their win over the Western Province Vodacom Cup team.

You have to remember that even though we cover all rugby news, we are a Sharks site after all. We understand your frustration in missing out on all the rugby action though.

If ever you would like to contribute in the form of pro-Lions articles, feel free to send me an email and we can see what we can arrange.

  • @Lassy_lion (Comment 1) : relax. It’s not like there are any other non-Super Rugby unions who get a lot of articles here. Lions aren’t flavour of the month. So what? Just support your team. This is Sharksworld, no obligation to write about Lions.

  • @Richard Ferguson (Comment 2) : I understand the fact that we are not playing “BIG” rugby at the moment does also have an effect on it….
I will surely start working on my article writing abillities and send in a artickle or 2.

  • Strange. Would have given Pollard bit of a break. He already played twenty odd games this year.
Du plessis was favored over Pollard for Tuks, wonder why the change of heart?

Apart from the props and one or two others, this is the cc side. Scary thought.

I was also a bit surprised by the inclusion of Pollard and the complete exclusion of du Plessis. One has to winder whether he has an injury of some sort.

This will be Pollard’s 25th game of the year so far, and should he play either Currie Cup or even Age Group Currie Cup, he looks set to play at least 33 matches this year..

  • This is a strong young Blue Bulls side with 14 players having played SA u/20 in recent years. Probably as close to a “junior Bok” side as any province can field.

Should be an exciting game, unfortunately not being broadcast.
