The Cheetahs have managed a massive coup in signing Springbok Willie le Roux for the next two years.

According to, Le Roux, who is currently contracted to Griquas, has announced a deal with the Cheetahs for the next two years. This means he will continue to represent the Cheetahs in the next two Super Rugby campaigns, as well as joining the Cheetahs Currie Cup team from next year.

He will be with Griquas for the 2013 Currie Cup season, although his participation will be limited with him being involved with the Springboks’ Rugby Championship campaign.

According to the report, le Roux had to choose between the Cheetahs, Sharks and Western Province, but opted to stay thanks to a massive R2 million offer from the Cheetahs.

  • How long before Griquas become irrelevant to the Cheetahs, like the minor unions in the other franchises?

  • Glad he’s staying in SA. I’m sure he got massive overseas offers and if Heyneke didn’t cap him he would have been lost to SA rugby IMO.

  • @Baylion (Comment 1) : as long as Griquas manage to stay in the CC premier division, they will continue to attract reasonable players and will continue to be a force.

  • With Ewen being named the new Wallabies coach is it too late to have Jake as our SR head coach?

  • Comment 6, posted at 08.07.13 09:45:20 by GreatSharksays Reply

  • @GreatSharksays (Comment 6) : Jake White is only as good as his assistant coaches.

He’s brilliant at bringing all the pieces and dynamics and personality clashes together to work as a unified machine, but he needs assistant coaches and technical coaches that knows what they are doing.

In S.A. those are few and far between….Plum was a brilliant assistant coach, but sadly most S.A franchises have converted assistant coaches to be their head coach.

  • That’s good news for the Cheetahs. Not retaining him would have been another sign of theirs being just a feeder union instead of being one of the “big boys”

How were the other offers on the table money wise?

I like Willie; he’s got oodles of talent and flair, but do feel he overdoes the chip kick thing. Against good counter attacking teams, that option could misfire very badly. Test rugby is more structured than instinctive these days because defences are getting better and Willie’s more of an instinctive lad than a structured one.

He’s definitely better than Zane and Joe P, but I’ll still take Ludik over him any single day, and possibly even Taute.

  • @robdylan (Comment 9) : You think the Tjietas offered more? Or was he willing to take the pay cut?

  • @FireTheLooser (Comment 10) :

Wouldn’t have been too difficult for him in the end to make a decision.

    WP- competition with Taute
Sharks- uncertainty regarding new coach and competition with Ludik (btw is his Agen move on?)

More importantly, the Cheetahs allow him freedom to play as he sees it, which would obviously not necessarily be the case at KP or Newlands.

  • Wise decision for le Roux and I think SA rugby ultimately wins. The Cheetahs playing style suits him best and if they manage to retain a few other key players it’ll keep them competitive going forward in Super Rugby. I think retaining a player of Willie’s calibre may also serve as a good recruiting tool for the Cheetahs.

  • The question we should now be asking is: who are the cheetas sacrificing to keep him?

  • @robdylan (Comment 16) :

Is that fully confirmed? No way out of it?

A tad surprised Ludik made the move. Zane and Joe P are out of the way next season and his only other competitors are Taute and Willie.

If he continues the display he’s had over the last couple of seasons, he’s a shoo in for Bok 15. Very good defender, and not too shabby on attack either. Good work rate and kicker.

He’s only 26, I thought he’d give it a crack for another year atleast to gain national honours.

And with no disrespect intended, he’s going to a club that got relegated from the Top 14 in 2012/13 ( and signed Burton Francis to play at 10!)

  • I am glad Willie is staying at the Cheetahs – can you imagine how overloaded that bandwagon of “sharks steal all Free State players ” would be? 😆
