Bismarck WAS offered captaincy – Reece

Sharks coach Hugh Reece-Edwards has told The Mercury’s Mike Greenaway that Bok hooker Bismarck du Plessis was the initial choice to captain the side against the Bulls last weekend, after it was decided that Keegan Daniel would not be starting.

According to the report, the coaches came up with a game plan that involved starting with their strongest possible forward unit; the decision not to reveal this fact up-front, though, was made in an effort to avoid the inevitable media storm that would have resulted from the regular captain being dropped. Du Plessis, however, refused the captaincy, on the grounds that he wanted to concentrate on his own performance in his first start after almost a year out.

The armband thus passed to Butch James, as the next most experienced member of the side. Ironically, both James and du Plessis were yellow carded in the match, whilst Daniel delivered a near-flwaless performance off the bench.

โ€œAll in all, our plan for this game came within a whisker of paying off,” said Reece-Edwards.

  • @JustPlainSHARK (Comment 1) : Spot on. They had 3 kickers but persisted with the one who was patently off form. Too little too late when they changed. BUT we showed we can play rugby .

Just don’t understand why Lambie was kicking really good at the start of the season… does confidence play such a big role?

  • @R Hayward (Comment 7) : out of Bis, Butch and Deysel, Deysel has the most experience as a captain.

  • Maybe Bissie doesnt want to captain a team that he may be leaving soon……just speculating.

  • Interesting reading about the pre-determined plan of subbing the the muscle with the quick loosies. Isn’t that nearly always the problem with SA coaches, it was part of the plan going into this game so that is what we must do. No, it was too early to sub them Hughey Lewis!
“we had a strategy with the big boys to start and the pace to finish and it was all going according to plan until the last second of the game. We certainly brought our side to the party.โ€
No Mr Bashford, it was pretty much one-way traffic as soon as you took them off!

  • Is it just me or does it seem a little surprising that the interim coaches would actually take the time to talk to the media about something as ‘trivial’ as this? I’m pretty impressed by their willingness to discuss this.

  • FireTheLooser agree out of Bis, Butch and Deysel, Deysel has the most experience as a captain but also the least experience of sitting in the sinbin.

  • @Uli (Comment 18) : It’s definitely not in the spirit of SR, for a team wanting to prove they deserve to be there, they’re going about it the wrong way.

  • “The futures of several players are also unclear ahead of the arrival of new director of rugby Brendan Venter and recently appointed chief executive John Smit.

โ€œItโ€™s happening, itโ€™s a reality that thereโ€™s a lot of guys leaving the union and the coaches leaving the union as well,โ€ said McLeod.

โ€œItโ€™s all part of the game. But itโ€™s the last game, we still want to finish on a high and it will be so much sweeter for all those departing to finish on a high.

โ€œSo regardless of the emotion, we want to end strongly.โ€

Where are you Roberto…there is news to be disseminated.
