Sharks XV fullback Gouws Prinsloo will want to make a strong claim for the Griquas number 15 jersey ahead of the Currie cup season, as he’s named to start in that position for his new side, against the Lions this weekend.

Prinsloo is one of a large number of former Sharks age-group players who will be in action, with the Lions squad also profiting from the surfeit of talent produced by the Sharks Academy. Luzuko Vulindlu will be on the wing for Griquas, while outside centre Jean Stemmet has also played some Vodacom Cup rugby for the Sharks. The Lions, on the other hand, have regular flyhalf Guy Cronje starting in the number 9 jersey, with his brother Ross set to cover the same position off the bench, assuming fitness.

Griquas have also included their lock acquisition, Hilton Lobberts, who will need to prove his worth in containing in-form Lions counterpart Hendrik Roodt. The Sharks connection continues in the front row, where both Nick Schonert (Griquas) and Julian Redelinghuys (Lions) have worn the number 3 jersey for the Sharks at age-group and Vodacom Cup level in the past.

Another young man who has quietly crept onto the radar is Griquas reserve hooker Gideon Bouwer, who represented the sHarks at under 21 level, before going on to play for Rovers in this year’s inaugural Community Cup.

  • Although the Cronje twins and Redelinghuis are West Rand boytjies who have come home 🙂

BTW, it seems Johan Ackermann is converting Guy into a scrummie as he (JA) feels he (GC) is better suited there

  • I see the Cronje twins have made themselves available for Zimbabwe. Suppose they’re eventually looking for an opportunity to head north to earn pounds or euros

  • @slammerboy (Comment 4) : Neither of them have been able to establish themselves as first choice players at the Lions, so I suppose they need to look at the next step if they want to keep playing rugby fulltime

  • This will be a great last warmup match…..Kwasse is a quality side and never a walkover…. If we can beat this side by 25+ and not let them score alot against us we can sure know we are ready for PR…. I say lions by 34…..GO LIONS 🙂

  • I’m surprised that Downey is not starting for them?

  • @stevovo (Comment 7) : Justin had been out of action for a few months with a knee injury he picked up during the Vodacom Cup. Working his way back to match fitness
