Four fond farewells for Sharks

The Sharks team named to play the Kings tomorrow features four players who will be bidding the team a sad goodbye on completion of the match.

Let’s start with the one that was always inevitable; Franco van der Merwe has proven a valuable member of the tight five this season and has strengthened the Sharks in an area of real weakness last year, the lineout. He also wins a special award for being the only lock to go through the entire campaign without getting injured, which says something! He’ll earn a 16th Sharks cap tomorrow, meaning an appearance in every game of the campaign. Good luck with promotion, Francs, and thanks for the memories!

A pair of backs will also be moving on; Meyer Bosman wins his 47th Sharks cap (and 108th overall) before heading off to join Stade Francais and Riaan Viljoen his 23rd (49th) before leaving for Japan. Both of these men have played vital – and often match-winning – roles for the Sharks over the last few years, with many a last-second winning try attributed to one or the other. Both have had their ups and downs with the side, but both have proven versatile, capable and reliable options across a variety of backline positions. Manne, on gaan julle altwee BAIE mis.

The fourth departure is possibly the saddest of all – because Jandre Marais is not only a young player that has been part of the Sharks system for many years, but also a real stalwart in a position where depth is sorely lacking. Earning just his 22nd cap, you can understand why he has opted to head for France after his senior game time has been limited – often unfairly so. Jandre, we’ll miss you, boet. Thanks for your contribution – especially that awesome try on debut – and we wish you the best at Bordeaux.

The Sharks match 22 named for the game boasts a total of 1388 Super Rugby caps, at an average of 63 per player.

  • Losing Jandre is a crime not a loss. The only bright side is the reason he’s going has left.

  • Marais leaving is such a disappointment. Could Du Toit being picked ahead of him been the final straw or was it Franco that made him decide to seek greener pastures do you think? I remember his try against the Reds last year, until that point in the game we looked like we were going to get steam rolled. A real pity he is leaving.

  • Would there be a chance we get Franco back should the Lions come up short against the Kings? Anyone know what his Lions contact length is?

  • Here is another thought, with Craig Burden being relegated to 3rd choice (once again), how much longer do we expect him to stay at the Sharks. I know he is a Durban man through and through but his career doesn’t seem to be going anywhere at the Sharks. Maybe a move to the Lions or Kings is on the cards, I’m sure both teams can use him. Griqua’s seems to be luring local talent, although that may be tough for a proper english boy, I know I struggled in Bloem?

  • It almost feels as if the Sharks are entering somewhat of a rebuilding phase…thanks van Zyl, you’ve steered the Sharks into many a ditch during your time at the helm.

Our Craven week team is utter rubbish.
U/19 and U/21 haven’t won some silverware for what seems like an eternity.
Voda-Cup team proudly keeping the chokers tag alive.
Senior side trying to hold their heads high after yet another failed campaign.
Sharks hemorrhaging senior players over the past 5 years like it’s a national sport.

And then we still have those blind devotees crying over Plum’s departure and the appointment of Smit. It really could not have gotten any worse, unless we were the Lions…a franchise who finally seems hell bent on putting things right. Kings do not stand a chance.

  • And don’t forget the farewell to the two assistant coaches that have done an incredible job for the Sharks.

  • Comment 16, posted at 12.07.13 11:28:01 by TheGoose Reply

  • @FireTheLooser (Comment 14) : I think the favoritism at school level is by far the biggest problem for the failures of the craven week teams over the years. I remember going to trails in Durban and immediately you could see the coaches have already picked “their” best team long before the trails had even started. Not only did they waste everyone’s time, but also did not give anyone a fair chance at the team selection and probably broke a few young men too. I for one would love if John Smit could fix this issue. It had happen too many times that selection was based on what school you came from and not for how good you actually played.

With regards to Plum, I think everyone is unsure of what to expect in the future, lets go back to the Mac days, after him nothing great actually happened until Muir and then Plum took charge. We had some top coaches who coached the Sharks during that time and yet we failed badly until Plum got us the CC again. So I think in that regard people need to be patient, but also I think everyone is tired of being patient… How many comps do we need to lose before everything would be fixed?

  • @Uli (Comment 17) :
Interesting point on the favouritism. One must also remember the fact that the team has to have 9 previously disadavtaged players. Now due to kzns development system being so average, this means that these PD players aren’t necessarily the best either.

While up at Bulls country, they buy the best PD players from the Cape where they breed thorough rugby players.

Till we fix the development system, this will continue…unless they take down the quota system, whichever happens first I guess.

  • If Ludik is leaving, we’ll need to seriously think about moving Lambie to fullback and getting Demetri Catrakilis he has an exit clause in his contract if the Kings don’t play in next years SR competition. Going back to Province won’t work, there’ll be Elton, Gary, Peter etc.. Let’s move quickly John!!! This is the most under estimated player in SA and I actually think he’ll be the best flyhalf in the country if that’s not already the case.

  • The main problem for rugby in SA is cost. You must pay R80/person to go watch rugby and DSTV (R600/month) or M-net (R350) to get any games on tv. For soccer you pay R30/person and it’s free on e-tv and SABC and cheap on DSTV (R250). Rugby needs to become cheaper to fill stadiums and get people to watch the games on tv.

  • @Horsy (Comment 18) : good and sad point about school kids being subject to the influence of ratial bias and representation. It is true, it’s also unfair to both parties the player of color and the other. Back in my day I played with Tim Dlulane a player that we had no doubt he would become a great player as he did. I also played with a few really crap players who made the cuts due to demographics…my point is Schools Rugby and the Craven Week is no place to go and exhibit values that have no bearing on the future of rugby. We have enough exposure on schools level to show case development, and the worst case scenario for me is white kids black kids brown kids if you are in a team you love and know the game. Team selections that causes Good players to doubt their Merritt in selection and influence their confidence is the worst thing you can do to a aspiring young sports men. And I think the system is doing just that. It’s fair to no one on the Park at that dAy that they take the field, but the polititions have the stats to back their idiotic agendas. I feel for the kids they are hurting, not the system guiding them…I think Rob should give some freedom to chat about this crap…it’s been hurting KZN and the Eastern cape for a couple of years now.
