Maritz starts for under 19s

Sharks under 19 coach Deon Kayser has made two changes to his starting lineup for Friday’s home game against the Lions, with Paarl Gim centre Neil Maritz making his first start of the campaign, albeit at right wing.

Maritz starts in place of Mike Cloete, who benches this week, while the other change sees Eldoraigne lock JP Grobler take over from Christo Steyn in the number 5 jersey.

There is some “international flavour” in the side in the form of openside flanker Joe Jones, who represented Scotland at schools level last year before moving to Durban in the hope of forging a career as a Sharks player. Also coming into the squad this week is Jonas Mikalcius, a young loose forward who has already represented his native Lithuania in sevens. He takes over form Michaelhouse boy Stephan Hartman on the bench this week.

The other unlucky player to miss out is winger Wion Robertse, whose place on the bench goes to Cloete.

The game kicks off at 13h30 on Friday on the main field at Kings Park, with entrance free.

  • Interesting team announcement… I suspected a prop from Selborne who has played very good rugby for Collegians under 20A’s all year will get a look in. Kyne Slinger travelled with the team to East Londen as back-up. I suppose not being contracted counts against a player as contracts need to be justified.

  • @Fanatic (Comment 1) : is that right? Interesting that they would have taken a fifth prop.

do you know anything about Weideman? Looks like a huge unit…

  • Sharks website says the games are in the main stadium, SARU website says they’re on KP2. Tend to favour KP2 for these games, more of an atmosphere with friends & family around the field than playing in an empty stadium

  • @disgruntled shark (Comment 3) : tend to agree, but also nice for the boys to get the feel for the “hallowed turf”.

Go with what the Sharks say… they’re the ones arranging the matches.

  • @Fanatic (Comment 1) : I saw Kyle Slinger in March, geez he’s lost a lot of weight since last year, I’m sure he’s fitter and a lot more mobile now

  • I think I have the wrong JP Grobler… I think the one we have went to Eldoraigne, not Otji in Namibia…

  • Bulls and to an extent WP sign the schoolboy stars but the Sharks give those ‘lesser known’ players a chance to shine and make a name for themselves. Hopefully encouraging to those kids maybe not convinced by moving to a union where too much competition for places exists.
