Sharks secure Marco Wentzel as lineout kingpin

Sharks CEO John Smit has just confirmed to Sharksworld that former Bok lock Marco Wentzel will join the Sharks ahead of the Currie Cup campaign.

34-year-old Wentzel has been an important figure for Wasps in the UK, in his dual role as player and line-out coach and with Smit’s new emphasis on specialist coaching for the Sharks, this is the sort of role he foresees for Wentzel in Durban too. “I can confirm he’s coming and he’s coming to play rugby,” says Smit in typically forthright style, adding that experience in the number 5 jersey is key to success and something sorely needed right now, given the alarming injury toll amongst the Sharks’ second row stocks. “I saw when I played against Marco in the UK that he still plays a damn good game of rugby and you can never be over-stocked with tight forwards, given the amount of rugby the guys play.

“We’ve had a long line of really top 5-locks at the Sharks, from Mark Andrews through to Albert van den Berg and Johann Muller, but it’s an area where we’re a little short now and we want to make sure we keep experience in that position”.

More important, though, particularly on a longer-term basis, will be Wentzel’s impact as a line-out specialist, where Smit sees him “working with and mentoring the number 5s, all the way up from under 19 level up”. Wentzel is a certified level 3 coach and will I’m sure, given his “advanced years”, in time transition more to off-field duties than on.

Smit also confirmed that the Sharks are working hard to retain the services of Pieter-Steph du Toit, adding that the youngster could benefit hugely from Wentzel’s knowledge and experience.

Boerseun, no offence mate, but did you READ the article? Did Smit not say that they want Wentzel as a mentor to younger players? I know we all like to pretend Piet-Steph is the best 5-lock in the world, but the fact is, he’s nowhere near. Marco Wentzel is coming in as our answer to Matfield, not as a replacement for Pieter-Steph du Toit.

  • @Uli (Comment 18) : Uli, look… I need to play open cards with you here. The Bulls are in the lead for du Toit’s signature, as far as I can make out. They appear to have offered him a lot more than his fair “market value” and the Sharks now need to decide whether to risk upsetting the whole balance in their squad by matching that… even if they do match it, he might still decide to leave.

John is working hard to create the best environment for the players and get the best individual coaching expertise… hence the appointment of a “man manager” like BMH along with specialists in each of the key technical areas. This will ensure that as players come through the ranks, they have all the right skills to ensure success in the future.

What I cannot do is give you a concrete assurance that it will be enough to retain du Toit right now, though.

  • @robdylan (Comment 23) : Well we all know where the Bulls’ emotional spending has gotten them thus far.

I dunno who’s wife is running the cheque book there, but she’s spending without thinking of any consequences. I suspect a lot more bulls players will also abandon ship if PSdT is bought above this “fair market value”.

Strange how everyone applauded when Straueli got Marius Joubert in from oversees which turned out to be an ultimate train smash. Yet Smit gets an oldie in with his eye on him being a specialist lineout coach, and most people finds reason to have yet another go at Smit. 🙄

And unlike the Bulls, our specialist lineout coach won’t double as the attack coach. 😈

btw, with Smit seemingly handling player acquisitions, what’s Straueli still doing there?

The best reason for him to stay would be a video of the Bulls scrum in the last few games as opposed to the Sharks scrum with our injured players back….but without him packing down and let him imagine in which one of those he would rather be.

But clarity will surely make us all feel a lot more at ease.

I think Smit has a lot of brass to be willing to take on the “face” of the Sharks, which is probably why so much frustration is directed at him for everything happening at the Sharks.

In the past, whoever made the decisions hid behind the coach and players, making them his scapegoat. Not Smit though, he makes a decision, he takes responsibility….good man!

  • I am actually very excited about the sharks, when last did we ever hear that our management is actually planning for the future and also getting specilist coaches. Now we need to get a mental coach and a kicking coach. The communication coming out is more free than we have had in years. So excited about our union right now. GO SHARKS!!!

  • I’ll be disappointed if PSdT does hitch his wagon to the Bulls, but it’s not end of the world. Once Edwin Hewitt hits the treadmill, he’ll be as good as Steven Sykes. I think his bulk has actually helped our scrum a fair bit. That said, is he sticking with us for the Currie Cup, or will he be back with Griquas?

  • What a pathetic signing, Wentzel at 34 is way past his sell by date, in fact he was never much in his prime. Pathetic

  • @byron (Comment 81) : What did Ackerman achieve in his advanced years, nothing. But he was at least a better lock that Wentzel who never amounted to much.

Signing a never been at the age of 34 is a piss poor investment and smacks of short sightedness and raises serious questions about Smit and Venter moving forward.

Had it been the signing of say Quinn Roux, then we would have something to get excited about. Marco Wentzel is a very average lock who is over the hill

  • Saffex to say “if I was in charge I would sign whom ever…..” is worth nothing because 1. who the hell said Quin Roux and the rest is avaiable to sign and 2. is actually willing to sign for the Sharks. Also go read the story again Wentzel was signed as a player AND COACH to help with line-outs, can Quin do both like Wentzel? Fuck can all of us give Smit and co a chance to do their work and stop bitching about everything even before the players and coaches had a chance in the Currie cup.

  • @JD (Comment 85) : It sure baffles the mind how some folk just jump on every move by Smit and claim that they have a better solution. 🙄

Thankfully Smit is used to all the yahoo’s who always acted like they’d have been so much better than Smit at amassing 100 and something Springbok tests as captain. 😆

  • @FireTheLooser (Comment 86) : ja boet don’t get me wrong I did have my worries about Sharks signing Wentzel but if he is there to coach the youngsters then it’s ok. Let Smit and co show what they can do in the Currie cup before we start lighting the fires to torch the place. Hell telling all and sundry they are shit even before they had a chance to be good or shit is a bit premature and I for one is now gatvol of that!!!!!!!!!

  • @JD (Comment 85) : No matter which way you look at it, Wentzel is a piss poor signing. The guy was always and average player and is now long in the tooth. I would imagine the Sharks coaches should be able to coach the line-outs, its hardly brain science.

Its a poor investment and smacks of short sightedness

  • @byron (Comment 88) : He was a solid enough Bok lock when he was younger, but that decision to select him as an old man was pathetic – he was useless.

    At best an average lock
