Franco Marais will lead out an unchanged Sharks under 21 side against the Lions at Kings Park on Friday.

Coach Etienne Fynn has opted not to tinker with his winning combination, but will look for better accuracy and discipline against a Lions side that boasts a large number of pedigree players.

In particular, Fynn has kept faith in flyhalf Robert du Preez after a match-winning performance against Border last week, rather than opting to rush newly-crowned Sharks star Fred Zeilinga into action. it is anticipated that Zeilinga will play a starring role for the Sharks in the senior Currie Cup this year, despite being eligible for under 21 rugby.

Sharks under 21:
15 Keelan Bastew, 14 Sean Robinson, 13 Tyler Fisher, 12 Andre Esterhuizen, 11 Alcino Isaacs, 10 Robert du Preez, 9 Stefan Ungerer, 8 Guy Alexander, 7 Khaya Majola, 6 Murray Bondesio, 5 Stephan Lewies, 4 Wiehan Hay, 3 Nicolaas van Dyk, 2 Franco Marais (captain), 1 Allan Dell
Subs: 16 Greg Bauer, 17 Simon Kerrod, 18 Wade Elliot, 19 Johan Meyer, 20 Hanco Venter, 21 Brendan Cope, 22 Gareth Meikle

  • Golden Lions u/21:

15 Marais Schmidt, 14 Jacques Nel, 13 Harold Vorster, 12 JP du Plessis, 11 Damian Engledoe, 10 Jako van der Walt, 9 Vian van der Watt, 8 Ruaan Lerm, 7 Fabian Booysen, 6 Stephan de Witt, 5 Jannie Stander, 4 Ruan Venter, 3 Nico du Plessis, 2 Mark Pretorius, 1 Devon Marthinus.

Replacements: 16 Rikus van Niekerk, 17 Henri Boshoff, 18 Stephan Vermeulen, 19 Kwagga Smit, 20 Percy Williams, 21 Ashlon Davids, 22 Gideon Meiring

  • @Baylion (Comment 1) : ah – thanks.

What do you think of that team? I recognise Schmidt, Vian van der Watt, Fabian Booysen and Mark Pretorius

  • @robdylan (Comment 2) : It’s a good squad with some good experience in the side – 7 u/20 Boks (2012 & 2013) and a couple of SA Schools players. A number of players played Varsity Cup for UJ and also Vodacom Cup early in the season before the Lions senior players took over. Should give the Sharks a good go.

  • @Baylion (Comment 3) :Ruan Venter – 2011 u/20 Boks – was in competition with Ruan Botha and Paul Willemse last year but an injury kept him out of rugby for more than a year, only recently started playing again

Marais Schmidt, Vian van der Watt, Fabian Booysen and Mark Pretorius – u/20 Boks 2012

Kwagga Smit, Percy Williams and Devon Martinus – u/20 Boks 2013

Jako van der Walt – SA Schools 2011

  • @Baylion (Comment 4) : @robdylan (Comment 5) : That is a pretty strong Lions team – many of them were in the Lions U19 side that won the U19 CC in 2011. Also a lot of Vodacom Cup experience.
Ruan Venter is an outstanding prospect if he can get his injury set backs behind him. He was ahead of Paul Willemse and Ruan Botha, who both played SA U20 in 2012, until he was injured at the U20 WC in Italy where, if memory serves, his lock partner was Eben Etsebeth.

  • Anybody know how the loose trio did against Border. Anybody have the weight and length of 6 7 8??

  • @Baylion (Comment 1) : good side, just worry about Devon at loosehead, I only saw him once, but for such a big guy, he was in turbo reverse at the JWC, see a couple of u19s in Stephan Vermuelen and Jaco van der Walt, good to see Ruan Lerm, I like him. Where’s Claude Tshidibi?

  • @Ludz (Comment 10) : It seems the u/19s haven’t been announced yet.

The Lions just got their new web site going but the news updates are still old 🙁 . Got the u/21 side from

  • @Ludz (Comment 9) : I see they’re fast tracking Jaco vd Walt and Stephan Vermeulen. Both have a shot to make the SA U20s next year

  • @slammerboy (Comment 14) : definitely both in with a chance, Jaco will have major competition though, Josh Stander, Jean-Luc du Plessis, Ryno Eksteen, Pieter Jordaan, Handre Pollard. Wealth of flyhalf talent amongst the 94 boys

  • @luyanda (Comment 12) : According to the SARU database:

    Guy Alexander – H: 1,92m W: 94kg
    Khaya Majola – H: 1,85m W: 98kg
    Murray Bondesio – H: 1,78m W: 88kg

I suppose Murray Bondesio is family of the Lions scrummie, Michael Bondesio?

  • Comment 17, posted at 17.07.13 17:01:05 by Baylion Reply

  • @Baylion (Comment 17) : I wouldn’t rely too much on the SARFU stats – they are often unchanged from when these guys first appeared on the radar – eg Craven Week – so out of date and usually understated given how they tend to bulk up in U19-21.

  • Comment 18, posted at 17.07.13 18:37:19 by steve Reply

  • @Baylion (Comment 17) : Murray isn’t related to Michael Bondesio, I’ve asked him in the past. Supersport just assumed that he was during the Community Cup and Andy Cuppachino was happy to tell the world that they were brothers. That’s journalism of News24 standards

  • @disgruntled shark (Comment 19) : I’d heard they were cousins… but again, that wasn’t from the player’s mouth.

BTW, what will it take for you to become a “gruntled shark”? 🙂

  • @disgruntled shark (Comment 19) : Thanks, thought they might be cousins.

Well, between Andy Capp and Bobby Skinstadt they’re fighting to see who is the least knowledgeable of rugby commentators. 🙂

  • @robdylan (Comment 20) : Honestly, I just want a union that we can be proud of, like it used to be before we got ripped off with ticket prices, dealt with the arrogance of a relative failure of senior and junior management (Sharks Academy & empty trophy cabinets being examples), investing in our own schools and clubs as a point of preference before looking outside the province; and just getting the feeling that you are valued when you walk inside that stadium
