  • Sharks had a bad blow yesterday with both hookers ruled out through training ground injuries. Morne du Plessis starts the match at 2, with former Bull Jacques Taylor on the bench.

  • Sorry to be negative, but what does the Sharks Academy actually do?

I could probably Google this, but I’m outside in 31C, the chicken’s marinaded, the the coals almost ready, and I’m too bloody nafi.

Question: How many competitions have all our Sharks sides throughout the age groups and senior sides won since the inception of the academy?

We win some here and there, but there’s no evidence that it’s even close at being successful if winning cups is the measure of success. 🙁

    Or am I wrong?

  • @The Duke (Comment 39) : We have an Academy, which is supposed to ensure that we develop the talent we get from the schools into a winning culture.

The Bulls seem to be doing the best overall, so I’m wondering why we aren’t really seeing any results.

  • @The Duke (Comment 41) : Smittie is going to have so much hay on his fork; let’s hope he doesn’t feel the pressure go the quick fix, top down route.

  • @rhineshark (Comment 42) : Let’s hope he does a top-down, and bottom-up fix.

From a top down point of view, he’s ensuring he holds onto players of quality and restructuring the coaching setup.

Bottom-up, well it’s been quiet, except for his comment about entering into good relationships with the local schools. Time will tell, but not youngster will want to join a losing team, so the seniors need to perform (as well as the juniors).

  • I hope this also means that they look ‘outside of the box’ for those boys who choose not to go back to the academy but have awesome talent at club level. It appears that if you don’t go to the sharks academy it is just so difficult to make it regardless if you are at the top of your game and shine. The sharks coaches don’t seem to even watch many games. Maybe collegians vs rovers this week will get a look in! 🙄
