Sharks lock Pieter-Steph du Toit has pledged his immediate future to the Sharks, opting to extend his contract by two more years, according to EWN Sport.

This is the second piece of great news to come from EWN’s Jean Smyth this morning, after he confirmed that the du Plessis brothers appear likely to stay in Durban.

Pieter-Steph, who is highly rated by Bok coach Heyneke Meyer as the next “big thing”, has been aggressively targeted by both the Bulls and Western Province, but after a meeting with new Sharks CEO John Smit on Wednesday, opted to rather stay in Durban to become a great with the Sharks.

Well done Smitty, well done Steph. A little bit of magic!

Update: The Sharks have now confirmed the signing on their own website as well…

The Sharks are pleased to announce that Pieter-Steph du Toit has reaffirmed his commitment to The Sharks by re-signing for a further two years.

John Smit, The Sharks CEO stated, “Pieter-Steph has shown great promise and he has had a positive impact on the team since joining the senior set-up. We are thrilled that he has reaffirmed his commitment to The Sharks.”

The Sharks Commercial Manager, Rudolf Straeuli added, “We are delighted to have secured the signature of a player of the calibre of Pieter-Steph. We not only identified him, but he has also been developed through The Sharks Academy. He has a bright future ahead of him.”

Pieter – Steph said, “As a twenty year old rugby player I am living my dream and I am extremely privileged to be identified by The Sharks as a player who can play a role in the province going forward. I will continue to learn from the many experienced players in our team and I hope that I can make the contribution required and expected of me. I will work as hard as I can and always do my best for The Sharks.”

I’d basically given up hope that he was going to stay.

Now we need to bring Peet Marais up and get them going as a combo and we know we have great locks for years to come.

  • Well this is good news indeed. Well done to JS and co for securing him.

Also, don’t want to be the guy to stir the pot and upset everybody. But I read on (well yes not really accurate) News24 that Bismarck wants a “long term” bok contract. Apparently it will make his decision easier to stay in SA. So ja… I’m not losing sleep over that article just yet, but if anyone could just come out and say that it’s BS then Ill be happy.

  • From the Supersport website:

“Promising lock Pieter-Steph du Toit has re-signed with the Sharks for a further two years, the union announced on Friday.”

If Western Province had signed him, I’d imagine they’d have used a few more adjectives than merely “promising”.

  • @Vince (Comment 45) : @Vince (Comment 46) : @vanmartin (Comment 47) :

    Iree name bro!

You see, the problem we have in the Western Cape, is that we just have so much talent to choose from. Put it down to better schools, good fine, great food or just plain genetics.
Add to that, the fact that everybody wants to live in the beautiful Cape and all of a sudden we’re inundated with quality people and really top-class rugby players.

Obviously, under these circumstances, there will be players that fall through the cracks and end up playing for other provinces. You cant give every talented player a chance – there are just 15 players on a team! Thankfully we get it right more often than not, as is evidently showcased in 100 years of success on the field.

In reality, what this means is that other provinces, that for various reasons are not able to produce the quality of player that we can in Cape Town, are also able to compete and hold their head high, simply because of the generosity and position Western Province rugby finds itself in.

To a lesser degree, the same can be said for the Free State, though heaven alone knows why anybody would want to live there. Maybe the farms are just more affordable?

We will not only be able to retain our players but will be able to attract talent both on and off the field (coaches), not to mention the sponsors. The Board really needs to be given credit, may it continue to make the right decisions for The Sharks.
