Bulls now fly the SA flag

New Zealand are guaranteed a team in the Super Rugby final next weekend, after the Cheetahs and Reds lost out in qualifier action over the weekend.

The umpteen-time champion Crusaders (I must say I’ve lost count) trampled all over the 5th-placed Reds in a one-sided encounter on Saturday, winning by 38 points to 9 in a clinical display. They were forced to wait, though, for the result of Sunday’s game in order to discover whether to pack for Pretoria or not.

As it turned out, the unlucky Cheetahs suffered an agonising 13-15 reversal against the Brumbies, with a last-gasp try unfortunately not converted by flyhalf Riaan Smit. The Bloemfonteiners will return home, having tasted a dose of the same medicine that most other South Africans sides get when traveling away for a knock-out game. As 3rd-placed qualifiers, the Brumbies now face the second-placed Bulls in Pretoria this weekend, with the Crusaders traveling to North Island to take on the Chiefs.

While the result in Canberra was a poor one for Cheetahs fans, neutrals and Bulls supporters alike will be secretly glad at the way things turned out; facing the Brumbies at this stage looks a far better prospect than the Crusaders, for the Bulls and should Richie McCaw and company upset the Chiefs for the second time inside a month, the Bulls would have their third home final in just five years to look forward to.

  • The Brumbies Cheetahs game was generally very poor but Glen Jackson was the worst of the lot.

  • Good morning guys..
A bit off topic but I want to know your views on professional rugby players and going out.
I watched a couple of the bulls players on Saturday night and I must ask myself does drinking excessively actually affect their performance long term.
Or is it too much to judge them based on a good night out.

  • I just can’t support the bulls. They may be South African but they not the sharks. I still think the crusaders are going to win it this year. They peaking at the right time and they playing marvelous rugga.

  • I must say hitting The Watsons with a bat sound like fun, but I enjoyed the eastern capes enthusiasm. And I would love to see the EP a force once more. I think the lions however also need a Spot. Lets face it in future we will see a lot of Saffas in Aus franchises. They just don’t have our depth. And even with 6 teams I think we will always have 4 contenders in SA to lift the Cup. Thanks to Club Champs, Varsity Cup, and a healthy Currie Cup. 3 levels of competition we didn’t have 10 years ago…lets hope in 10 years the Boks are our biggest testimony of this…

  • @shaniboi (Comment 5) :

I believe it does effect performance, just based on diet and considering that beer and other alcohol is not the best when you follow a specific nutritional plan.

You have to be professional. Athletes have to make many sacrifices to be in peak condition for their sport and to perform at top levels, it just seems that sometimes athletes involved in team sports, Rugby, Cricket, aren’t willing to show the same commitment.

It’s not just the Bulls. And it definitely does have an effect, especially because it doesn’t just happen once a season.

  • The decision to play the QF game on a Sunday instead of a Friday/Saturday might come back to haunt the Brumbies.

Lesser time to adjust and I think they’ll succumb to the Bulls. Not to say that the Bulls don’t have their issues ( scrums are iffy, lineout is iffy in the absence of Spies, Botha and Kruger and their play is based on set piece dominance)

  • I support Jake White so the Brumbies has to win.

Also in the dark ages, when there was no chance that any SA team would make it to a semi final, let alone win SR, let alone the Sharks, I used to support the Crusaders when it came to the play-offs (if you can pick a team why wouldn’t you pick the team most likely to win).

I think the Crusaders have a good shot again this year, even if they have to fly to Pretoria, although then the Bulls might just edge them, but I don’t think the Bulls will be able to win in Hamilton if the Chiefs win their semi-final.

I’m supporting Brumbies, Crusaders … those are the two teams I like the most of the four.

  • Bulls should beat the Brumbies at Loftus, if they play like they have for the majority of the year at Loftus.

But the Crusaders are looking REALLY good. I don’t think any provincial side will beat them in their current form – home or away.
