Heads held high after Builders Sports Quiz

The first ever Builders Sports Quiz to be held in Durban happened at the Durban Country Club last night, with Sharksworld being invited to take part at the media table. Sharksworld had four of the ten representatives at the table, the table which was tied for first place but was counted out as a result of our journalistic background.

Sharksworld ran a little quiz to determine the representatives to join me at the evening, which was increased from 2 people to 4 people late in the week, with Marno de Wet, Caleb Charles and Barry Todd joining me at the event.

It started out with a great stand-up act from Dan Nicholl, who had the 200 strong crowd at his lips for the duration, with little jabs at each of the plethora of celebrities at the event. From calling out Pieter Dixon as the most famous hooker in the crowd, despite John Smit sitting at the table next to him, to joking about Wayne Fyvie’s multiple mistresses, the crowd enjoyed each and every moment.

The four Sharksworld representatives were joined by two East Coast Radio sports personalities, two Etv journo’s and two Gagasi FM reporters. The table made the decision to join forces and compete as one table of ten, against each of the other twenty tables on the evening.

Getting to the quiz, it was a straight forward, 60 question quiz that was split into two 30 questions halves. There were 6 sections of 10 questions each, starting with a ‘Careers’ section, moving onto ‘Cricket’ and thirdly going into an ‘Against all odds’ section. At half time, our team achieved a great score of 27 out of 30, leading at the break, our closest rivals being Darryn Smit and Morne van Wyk’s Dolphins team, on 24 points.

After a great dinner, the second round started with a tough section of rugby questions, which had most of the table flummoxed at times, but we pulled through with a decent 8 out of 10 for the section. The fifth section was named ‘Jack of all trades’ and was a collection of general sporting questions, ranging from the recent Durban July winner to the sporting personality whose nickname is Punter. This section went well for us with a 9 out of 10 score as well. The last section was a daunting set of Soccer questions, but with the boys from Gagasi FM stepping up with some amazing local knowledge, we managed another decent score to finish on 53 points, only getting 7 questions wrong on the night. Credit must go to Andre Bloem of East Coast Radio who is an encyclopaedia of knowledge, from knowing the coach of the Euro 2004 winning Greek team, to guessing that Jonathan Trott is the 32 year old who was born in the Cape and played local cricket and never represented South Africa.

When the final totals were in, the Dolphins team managed to draw level with us on 53 points in total, with Nicholl stating that our team was counted out into second spot. Credit must go to the team of cricketers who managed to keep up with a group of journalists, and are probably deserved winners.

Thanks must go firstly to Marno, Caleb and Barry who joined me on the night, it was great having you guys there, and sharing along with some great prizes at the end of the day. Secondly, to David Brooke from the ProSport International team who set up this Quiz with Builders Warehouse as the main sponsor, thanks for having us! We look forward to winning the competition outright next year.

  • @Salmonoid the Subtle (Comment 10) : There will be one in Cape Town and one in Johannesburg as well. The participants at the table basically doubled as the spectators. Other than them, nobody else was there
