Downey’s Sharks homecoming

Former Sharks age-group loose forward Justin Downey has apparently returned to Durban and will play for the Sharks, rather than his adopted team Griquas, in the 2013 Currie Cup.

The versatile 26-year-old has been used in all three back row positions during the course of his career; he was a stalwart for the Sharks at junior, Vodacom Cup and Currie Cup level for the Sharks between 2007 and 2010, before joining Griquas ahead of the 2010 Currie Cup. During his time “abroad” he went on to be capped by the Cheetahs at Super Rugby level, ably deputising for the perennially-injured Juan Smith in the number 7 jersey.

You don’t get more “black and white, through and through”, than Downey though, with the former Northwood boy clearly thrilled to return home to friends and family – and his beloved Sharks. The fact that he will be playing under the same coaches who developed him and backed him throughout his early career, both at the Sharks but also at College Rovers, is just the cherry on top.

Downey will join a strong Sharks’ loose-forwards contingent, with the battle for places sure to a tough one. An emphasis on rotation, though, along with the certain loss of Willem Alberts and Marcell Coetzee (as well as possibly Jean Deysel) to the Bok cause, should see him come strongly into the picture for Currie Cup game time.

Welcome home, Justin!

  • What about Hansie Graaff. I believe the Sharks have signed him too. Not sure exactly who he is but the Beeld seem to rate him.

  • Welcome back! And if the policy is going to be one of rotation, then signing him certainly does make sense.

  • @markm (Comment 8) : well, yes. Very pleased for my almost cousin 🙂

Justin, to me, is the ideal antidote to the “mercenary” culture of which we are often accused.

  • @robdylan (Comment 9) : Has Ludick signed a new contract with Sharks or have we lost him to Agen? 😕 Craig Burden is another in the non-mercenary style. A true team man as is Justin

  • A Good CC player is always welcome. In SR he will have to be content with VC and the odd bench slot when depth requires his use I’m afraid.

If he didn’t make the Cheetahs squad consistently then he will probably have a similar experience in Dbn.

  • @KSA Shark © (Comment 17) : I think we saw this year that even 2 good players in every position often isn’t enough. I agree with you that Justin will start off pretty far back in the queue when it comes to 7 – probably a bit closer at 6 – but with the injury record of the likes of Willem and Jean, you just never know.

  • 😈 I was hoping for a signing such as Kriel of the Lions. Okay, Justin the door is open, please impress to keep our moaners quiet. 😆 😈
