Deon Kayser’s Sharks under 19 side had the bonus point victory pretty much sewn up by half time already, going on to score 8 tries in Saturday afternoon’s 55-31 victory over Free State in Bloemfontein.

The concession of four tries to the hosts – three of them in the second half after the Sharks pretty much had the game sewn up – will, of course, be a cause of concern for the team and coaching staff, but with the boys bouncing back in such emphatic style after a loss at home in their previous outing, smiles will far outweigh the frowns in Kayser’s camp this week.

Flanker Barend Potgieter got the ball rolling early on, scoring a try in the fourth minute; this was soon canceled out by a try to Free State, but it was over the course of the next 25 minutes that the Sharks really sewed up the result, courtesy of further tries to centres Neil Maritz and Sandile Khubeka, and flyhalf Jean-Luc du Plessis. Fullback Colin Willemse took over the kicking duties and slotted three of the four conversion attempts, handing the Sharks a 26-10 half-time lead.

Any though of a meaningful Cheetahs fightback ended when du Plessis scored again shortly after the break. Captain Chris de Beer crossed the chalk next, followed in short order by winger Alrin Eksteen. The Sharks lead 45-10 at this stage and had built up enough of a lead to ensure that the three Free State tries they subsequently let in would not be anywhere near enough to close the gap. Flanker Joe Jones extended the Sharks’ lead further with the eighth try, with du Plessis adding a penalty to his superb haul on the day as well.

The win moves the Sharks into fourth place on the log, with 10 points from 3 games, but they have a game in hand on the third-placed Leopards, whom they will face in Potchefstroom on Friday. Jean-Luc du Plessis is currently second-highest points scorer in the competition.

Free State u19 (31): Tries Brandon Krause, Jan Venter, Naldo Meyer, Nicolaas Lee. Conversions Warren Potgieter (4). Penalty Potgieter.
Sharks u19 (55): Tries Barend Potgieter, Sanidle Khubeka, Neil Maritz, Jean-Luc du Plessis (2), Alrin Eksteen, Chris de Beer, Joe Jones. Converions Colin Willemse (6). Penalty du Plessis
