The Mercury’s Mike Greenaway has confirmed, via Sharks CEO John Smit, that Butch James is unlikely to be fit to face Griquas on Friday night.

Whilst James is free to play from a disciplinary point of view – his suspension for a dangerous tackle against the Bulls given in weeks, rather than a set number of games – it seem that the injury specter has again raised its head and the veteran flyhalf is now in doubt for the opener due to a calf strain picked up in practice.

Fred Zeilinga thus enjoyed an 80-minute outing at flyhalf against the KZN All Stars last week and looks set to reprise that role against Griquas, when the Currie Cup proper gets underway on 9 August. With none of Pat Lambie, James or even Hansie Graaf available for selection, it will be interesting to see whether Rob du Preez comes into the picture as Zeilinga’s understudy this week; there appear to be no other flyhalf options on the roster of currently-fit players.

  • Good call! Granted it’s the only call we could make, but good none the less. Lets see what the guy can do.

  • Young eemerging talent like Zeilinga has to be given the opportunity at this kevel to show that he has what it takes.

Much as I have always been a Butch james fan, I would have been very disappointed if Butch had been selected ahead of Fred.
