Meyer back at Ellis Park

Journeyman scrumhalf Tian Meyer, having come within a whisker of making the Sharks Currie Cup squad, has seemingly returned to Johannesburg and will sit on the bench for the Lions this weekend, after an unprecedented injury crisis has decimated their scrumhalf ranks.

Injuries to Mike Bondesio, Ross Cronje and Vian van der Watt have resulted in a bizarre start at scrumhalf for the other Cronje twin, Guy – who is usually a flyhalf. Derick Minnie leads a side that lacks experience up front, with props and locks all very green at this level, after the loss of the likes of CJ van der Linde, Franco van der Merwe and Hendrik Roodt.

Marnitz Boshoff has been selected ahead of Elton Jantjies at flyhalf, in a suprising move.

The Lions face the Cheetahs at Ellis Park this weekend in their Currie cup opener.

15.Chrysander Botha, 14.Deon Helberg, 13.Stokkies Hanekom, 12.Dylan des Fountain, 11.Anthony Volmink, 10.Marnitz Boshoff, 9.Guy Cronje, 8.Willie Britz, 7.Warwick Tecklenburg, 6.Derick Minnie (capt), 5.Hugo Kloppers, 4.Stephan Greeff, 3.Ruan Dreyer, 2.Martin Bezuidenhout, 1.Jacques van Rooyen.
Replacements: 16.Francois du Toit, 17.CJ van der Linde, 18.Lambert Groenewald, 19.Jaco Kriel, 20.Tian Meyer, 21.Elton Jantjies, 22.Lionel Cronje/Robert de Bruyn

  • What’s the deal with Franco Van Der Merwe, is he injured or has he left the Lions?

  • @Lassy_lion (Comment 11) : ok look – either you’re being funny, or you actually are dumber than I gave you credit for 🙂

Go look at the teams announced by the Sharks and WP… then come back and say that again, with a straight face.

Even Griquas have named a better line-up than the one above.

  • @robdylan to be fair, the lions defeated the sharks in the lions challenge with a shit team like this one, and you guys had a pretty strong side. But on paper i do agree that you guys look way better. But lets wait and see how we play now that all the stress of super rugby status is over.

  • @Groot Leeu (Comment 15) : take JC and Roodt out of that team and you reckon you would’ve still beaten us?

    I think not.

You’ve also lost Redelinghuys and Combrinck.

Botha is a liability at fullback. The oke doesn’t know how to defend. Why not back Kobus de Kock?

  • I agree, JC and Roodt’s departure left us a bit thin on those positions, and the scrums.

Would prefer lionel Cronje on fullback instead of Botha. I dont know Kobus de Kock that well, I’ve heard great things about him though. Would love to see him on the field some time.

But let see how everything goes this season.

  • Cant understand why sharks never signed Franco van der Merwe. Was one of the best locks in the Super 15

  • @Richard Ferguson (Comment 22) :

would be a sad day for SA rugby if the Bulls get relegated . think the Puma team might be strong enough to take them ?

if the Lions finish bottom we are pretty much screwed …

  • you’ve got to admit it would be somewhat classic if – immediately after winning promotion back to Super Rugby – the Lions managed to get relegated from the Currie Cup 🙂

It would be rather indicative of the state of our Rugby if that happened..
