We’ve had a bit of clarity regarding former Sharks under 21 flyhalf Willie du Plessis, who’s been in the news a fair bit recently.

Du Plessis, the Affies boy who chose Durban after school, rather than Pretoria, returned to the Bulls and Tuks a few years back and has gone on to play a starring role for the latter over the last two Varsity Cup campaigns. He’s battled to make an impact at senior level in light blue, however, accumulating only a handful of Vodacom Cup caps along the way. It was earlier announced that he had opted to leave Pretoria to join the Lions, only for news to emerge today that he’s in fact on his way to join the Cheetahs.

In fact, both are true – it’s really really just a question of timing. Du Plessis has agreed to move to the Lions, but our information is that his two-year contract will only start after this year’s Currie Cup, on 1 November 2013. Deemed surplus to requirements by both Bulls and Lions, he will thus join the Cheetahs for the duration of the Currie Cup, on a three-month deal.

In another interesting development – also concerning a Willie – Blue Bulls hooker Willie Wepener looks set to re-join the Lions, as early as this week. I’m personally quite surprised at this, since Wepener played for the Bulls in the opening round, which I would have thought would preclude him from representing another team this season.

  • the same thing happened with Jano Vermaak when he moved from the Lions to the Bulls . He did so in the middle of the Currie cup season .

I think the player has to be available for the union for a certain amount of weeks before being eligible for semi finals and finals .

  • That must suck! Moving to a new union and he’s already surplus to requirements.

    Nice move there Willie!

Thought the same thing as well but didn’t Jano Vermaak make the move in the opposite direction a few years back mid Currie Cup and hit the ground running in light blue?

TBH im not sure if that makes it better or worse 😉
one thing is sure in my mind tough . Lions need to start hanging onto players if we want to get somewhere ..

I think this might be a indication that Elton is heading somewhere else ?

  • @Zibbie (Comment 9) : I think it would be a brain dead decision on Elton’s side to go down to WP/Stormers. He suits the Lions gameplan and not the Stormers (as we already saw this year).

i was a big Elton fan but my confidence in him is busy slipping … fast … Boshof might be a better option ?

  • @Zibbie (Comment 11) : At the moment Boshoff is a better option but only because of form and confidence. AC and the Stormers did Elton no favours.

The only other team in SA where Elton would have thrived would be the Cheetahs. Even the Sharks are too conservative.

  • @Zibbie (Comment 11) : I personally think Jantjies just needs a bit of a rest…. He will get his confidence back then he will be his old self again… Boshoff is in great nick and can do the job for us for now…. I hope he gets back to his old self because he is a really quality player if in form.

  • Speaking about Willie’s – what is the situation with the more famous Willie? Is he joining Cheetahs for this year’s Currie Cup or only next year?

  • @Bokhoring (Comment 16) : still with Griquas for CC – assuming he plays any this year.
