I would save money to buy…

I‘ve been using this blog to catch up on news and opinions for a very long time. I refrained from logging in and commenting until very recently – even though I had a profile.

I have noted on many occasions that this is a place of refuge for many a true supporter of one of the world’s most inconsistent teams. That inconsistency has made dear friends of mine refer to Sharks supporters as the Taliban of rugby supporters. I think they mean the mafia though, but I understand the sentiment. We are hardcore. We are highly critical of our team. Just don’t think you as an outsider are allowed to voice the same criticism. You have not gone through the inconsistency, the choking and the subsequent ridicule that has shaped every Shark supporter since the B-leagues. You should rather keep your mouth off our boys.

This description is a bit extreme. I have always thought us the more realistic of supporter bases. The more likely to compliment the opposition supporters on a game well played and a victory well deserved – which raises the obvious question of why we continue to “Boo!” the opposition kicker when he’s lining up a shot at goal… my little bugbear. Just glad our schoolboy rugby does it the Irish way.

Even through the bad times, of which we are so unpleasantly reminded every time we lose a match as we did on Saturday we always remain hopeful. We continue to dream.

Many come here to this blog in dire times to hope and dream with likeminded individuals. In dire times I fall back on my PS2 and Rugby 08 (yes… it a PS2 because the PS3 rugby games are poor!). I’ve played that game so many times I’m almost unbeatable. I really am that good though – haha – I have proof (I’m Ettienne from team MediaCom).

I think my PS2 was the reason I started telling every Lions supporter I could find that I was saving money to buy Louis Ludik. Hell that guy impressed me when he was playing for the Lions and he’s been fitting in nicely into the Sharks fold recently – especially at outside centre. I’ll be very sorry to see him go if he does decide to do so.

Freddie Michalak is another one of those players I was saving money for. Not only did he remind me of Thierry Lacroix but by association he reminded me of a time in Sharks rugby when things were going well. There’s just been something special about a Sharks team with a few Frenchies in the mix. Lacroix… Roumat… *sigh*

In recent times with all the player moves I have starting thinking of which players I would like to see in the Sharks jumper in the near future. Who would I save money for and buy?

First up, Gary van Aswegen – and let’s be clear this is definitely not to replace Lambo. If it’s not coached out of him through incompetence Gary just has the potential to be as good if not better than anything NZ or Oz can deliver. He has a special something.

Secondly, Jan Serfontein. I see Danie Gerber in the way he plays the game and who wouldn’t want Danie in their team? Strong and athletic with a healthy dose of ball skills.

There is no substitute for pace. That said, I would like to pry Cheslin Kolbe out of Allister Coetzee’s cold little fingers. He’s got pace to burn and skill to match. He ran circles around the opposition during the u20 World Champs.

And for a bit of French influence? I would have liked a younger Sebastien Chabal – yes, younger… the oke is older than I am and almost as old as Stefan Terblanche. He brings a quality that draws fans, but he’s not an option though. In fact there are currently very few Frenchies that fit the bill. I find myself having to go and fetch Eben Etsebeth out of the ancestral home of the French Hugenot’s to find a player that has the potential impact of a Vleis Visagie. Vleis, now there’s a character as John Mitchell would say. I like teams that are built around characters – note I said teams. In the 90s we had all a wealth of characters, but despite the individual characters they were a brilliant team.

Here’s hoping we unearth some new characters and hear a carbon copy of Stefan Terblanche’s 2010 winning speech.

  • Jonah Lomu Rugby Challenge and RWC 2011 just aren’t the same.

  • @Argex (Comment 1) : Especially since the only 2 teams with proper players and Australia and New Zealand. I still enjoyed ’08 or ’06 with the option of the B&I Lions tour.

  • dude that game is awesome! im unbeatable too so much so i just play the world league start off with piss poor forwards and slow backs but its so rewarding to see your team win against an elite team lol! i still havent had a job offer from the sharks in that game its so fruastrating i even stayed in devision 2 on purpose hoping id get a job offer from the sharks but no luck. but funny enough no matter how good you make the team and get super good players if you let them play on they own they lose for some reason.

  • If he is serious about going to the WC in 2015 then I’d like to see the Sharks pursue Jacque Fourie’s signature.

  • @FireTheLooser (Comment 14) : I never considered that, but then again he’ll probably look to go back to WP anyway so we’ll probably never find out.

  • @Jacques Venter (Comment 15) : I’m not sure Jacque Fourie would come back… the competition for a centre birth is getting hectic… almost like trying to get a spot as a loosie
