Clean bill of health for Cheetahs – well sorta….

Cheetahs coach Naka Drotske has included fullback Hennie Daniller in his starting lineup for this weekend’s trip to Newlands, after scan this week apparently confirmed that his injured hand does not require surgery.

The bit that baffles me is that Daniller, who clearly has a chronic problem with the hand, will again be asked to grin and bear it, rather than getting the rest he so desperately needs. Are things really so bad in the Free State that they cannot entrust anyone else – anyone at all – with the jersey while Daniller is given a chance to actually get over whatever is wrong with him? I guess they must be.

Another player who has seen limited involvement in training this week, utility back Riaan Smit, will play at the weekend, having been named at right wing.

In fact, the only change to the Cheetahs team sees Willie du Plessis move onto the bench, in place of Joubert Engelbrecht. Du Plessis will sit alongside Piet Lindeque, a man he knows well from his Sharks age-group days.

Cheetahs: 15 Hennie Daniller, 14 Riaan Smit, 13 Johann Sadie, 12 Robert Ebersohn, 11 Raymond Rhule, 10 Elgar Watts, 9 Sarel Pretorius, 8 Philip van der Walt, 7 Pieter Labuschagne, 6 Johannes Prinsloo (captain), 5 Waltie Vermeulen, 4 Lodewyk de Jager, 3 John-Roy Jenkinson, 2 Hercu Liebenberg, 1 Caylib Oosthuizen.
Replacements: 16 Ethienne Reynecke, 17 Wian du Preez, 18 Teboho Mohoje, 19 Davon Raubenheimer, 20 Piet van Zyl, 21 Willie du Plessis, 22 Piet Lindeque.

  • Slow clap for Naka. They got through Super rugby with minimal injuries so he must think his guys are invincible.

  • @PTAShark (Comment 1) : Oh don’t be so sour. many a player have played with niggling injuries! You forget Juba, playing with a broken hand!!

Daniller went for a scan, and the doctors okayed him to play, and that surgery wasn”t required.

These players earn their keep, so these decisions are taken on medical advice.
