Good news, Sharks fans! It won’t be too much longer until we see the return of Pieter-Steph du Toit to the Sharks engine room.
The young man – recently at the middle of a tug of war which the Sharks ultimately won – tweeted a day or so back that he’s expecting to be back on the field within another two to three weeks. Photos from Sharks training sessions this week would seem to confirm that Steph is very much back “in the thick of things” and even seems to be taking contact, after surgery for a sternum injury sustained during Super Rugby.
The bad news from a Sharks point of view, of course, is that du Toit is unlikely to play much Currie Cup rugby after his return, with Bok coach Heyneke Meyer no doubt planning an almost immediate call-up to the Rugby championship squad for the player, whom he rates highly. Let’s hope that sanity prevails and that Steph is afforded at least a game or two at Currie Cup level to get back into shape before making a long-deserved test debut.
The new for another Sharks lock, Anton Bresler, is less good, it seems, with a return after his shoulder surgery now delayed until the second half of the Currie Cup.

Good news for the sharks and bokke
Ouch poor Bresler.
Shoulder surgery is darned difficult to come back from, I’m still struggling with mine after March surgery.
Much as PS deserves to get a Bok call-up, I think it would be best for him to finish CC, get back to top form, and then debut at the EOST
@Butchie34 (Comment 2) : I broke mine badly about 4 years ago. Took ages to get any strength back.
Thank Goodness We play you guys this week 😀 😀
@StevieS (Comment 4) : Yeah, it’s horrible. Nothing more emasculating than a shoulder injury. Maybe one but I would rather not think of that
Not his Shoulder lucky to see him after 1 game top man top player
@Butchie34 (Comment 6) : Hahaha DON’T think of THAT!!!
Yeah, I snapped my collar bone in 2 places and shattered the bone in between. And it was on my left-shouler and I’m left-handed 🙁
Jislaaik this news is almost as good the day the news got through that he signed again!!!
@StevieS (Comment 8) : I tore all the cartilage off the front of my right shoulder and cracked off a nice big piece of the ball which fits into the socket. It dislocated at least once a week for about a year and a half before I had the first of my two surgeries.
Also right shoulder and I’m right handed
@R Hayward (Comment 9) :
@Butchie34 (Comment 10) : 😯 Eina man! How did you do that?
@StevieS (Comment 12) : In one of the sissiest ways possible.
I went ice skating and fell on the wall. Doc told me that if I’d been a professional rugby player I would have to hang up the boots.
@Butchie34 (Comment 13) : Hahahaha shame man, that sucks. Hope it’s recovering well.
I broke mine playing rugby. Grubbered the ball through, their fullback knocked it on, the ref blew his whistle for the scrum, then the outside centre late tackled me. Picked me up and tipped me, diving down with me, so my weight and his on the shouler 👿
@StevieS (Comment 14) : Eina, that sucks. At least that’s a story worth telling!
@Butchie34 (Comment 15) : Haha ja, just bleak it did have to happen. I saw the ref the next weekend and asked if he at least carded the guy. His reply:
“Oh, you mean when you tripped and fell outside the lines?” 😯
@StevieS (Comment 16) : 😆 That sucks!Sort of like Brad Thorn’s late spear on John Smit which tore his groin muscle. Totally unpunished.
My positive is that at least I have some gnarly scars on my shoulder.
@Butchie34 (Comment 13) : Eina Bliskem!
@StevieS (Comment 14) : Eina Bliskem!
@Butchie34 (Comment 17) : What’s that movie quote from ‘The Replacements’?:
“Pain heals, glory is forever and chicks dig scars” 😀
@StevieS (Comment 19) : That’s the one! 😆
It’s a nice long one so I’ve already joked with someone who asked that they had to almost take my whole arm off to do the op!

@steve haag (Comment 7) : Is that Bresler or PDST?
feel for poor anton i tore my ac joint , back muscel and bi sep muscel was horible had the op and said never again would not wish that surgery on anybody and the worst thing is i still can’t sleep on my right shoulder and i’m also right handed
@sharks4eve2013 (Comment 22) : 😯
@sharks4eve2013 (Comment 22) : It’s horrible. And I can’t even imagine having to take hits on the shoulder.
These guys have my respect!
@StevieS (Comment 24) : sorry miss read the [email protected]Butchie34 (Comment 25) : no look mine as well
Good news indeed. I also think he should play most of the CC and regain full fitness befor HM poaches him for the Bokke lol..
Awesome news, hope he plays some CC.
I believe Benji Marshall has dislocated his shoulder several times, and then also fractured it. (not sure if it was the same one)
Not sure what sort of an impact he’s going to have.
@Die Kriek (Comment 3) : Wrong we need PSDT back with the Boks asap, he is far superior to the very average Juandre Kruger
