Odwa doubt for Sharks

The Sharks’ win over the Lions on Friday night did not come without cost; veteran fullback Odwa Ndungane was forced from the field early in the second half with a hamstring injury that is apparently causing the medical staff some concern.

While a detailed prognosis has yet to be confirmed, the chances appear very slim at this stage that the 32-year-old Springbok will be fit to face the Cheetahs this weekend, with fears that he may be forced to spend a protracted spell on the sidelines.

Fortunately for the Sharks, either of Jaco van Tonder or new recruit SP Marais could slot in at fullback, and that without even having to resort to recalling Louis Ludik from midfield, where he’s been filling in for the last month. Sizo Maseko should possibly also be fit this week, adding further options at wing.

  • Play Van Tonder at 15 and leave Marais and Mvovo on the wings.

  • As well as Odwa has played at 15 of late, I still think this is a perfect opportunity to play
    15 SP
    14 Maseko
    11 Mvovo

I reckon that is a much more potent back 3. Try scorers all of them.

  • Odwa was doing a great job but this is an opportunity for a young gun to show what he can do.

  • When does Steyn come back? Because when he does, my backline would look like:

    9. Reinach
    10. Zeilinga
    11. Mvovo
    12. Whitehead/Williams (depending on the form of the former)
    13. Steyn
    14. Marais
    15. Ludik

    20. McLeod
    21. James
    22. van Tonder
