Etienne Fynn’s Sharks under 21 side went down to Western Province at Newlands on Saturday, sliding two full places back on the table in the process to end the weekend in third spot.

The 20-3 defeat at the hands of one of the fancied sides in the competition will have brought a few Sharks fans down to earth again, after perhaps getting a little carried away in their euphoria when the Sharks trounced the Leopards in Potchefstroom last week.

A lone penalty from flyhalf Rob du Preez was all the Sharks had to get enthusiastic about this week; Province held them to 3-all at the break, but took their chances better in the atrocious conditions, to score two tries in the second half.

The Sharks under 21s will need to regroup; they have the pace-setting Blue Bulls in their next game and apparently also have a few injury concerns to deal with. The match will take place at Kings Park on Friday afternoon.

Western Province under 21 (20): Tries Josh Katzin, Craig Barry. Conversions Tim Swiel (2). Penalties Swiel (2).
Sharks under 21 (3): Penalty Rob du Preez

  • I had to rub my eyes when I saw this result. What do you mean Andre Esterhuizen didn’t score 3 tries????

  • I guess the conditions were never going to be conducive to running rugby. Didn’t see the match, but this was always gonna be a tough one!

  • Argex be glad you missed it!!!! They were pathetic on attack!!!!!! they had no idea what to do except play “crash-ball” rugby. I was really looking forward to seeing all the “star” players in action, but after 25min of pain I swiched to soccer.

  • @JD (Comment 3) : haha I guess with 3 – 3 as the halftime score it was a pretty dull affair. Hopefully things improve the longer the season goes on. But the amount of injuries picked up are not gonna help at all!!
