Boks change 1 on bench

Springbok coach Heyneke Meyer has kept changes to a minimum ahead of Saturday’s return Rugby Championship fixture against Argentina n Mendoza.

Meyer has kept faith in the starting lineup that recorded a 73-13 win over the same opposition in Soweto last week – and who can blame him for doing so? The only change – enforced though it may be – is a significant one. Reserve scrumhalf Fourie du Preez was arguably the architect of the Boks’ huge win, with a marked improvement in their all-round play pretty much from the moment he took the field. A strange contractual quirk means that the former Bull will not be available this week, meaning a move into the match 23 for Jano Vermaak.

Sharks hooker Bismarck du Plessis, though named on the bench, is in line for a 50th test cap this week.

South Africa: 15 Willie le Roux, 14 Bjorn Basson, 13 JJ Engelbrecht, 12 Jean de Villiers (captain), 11 Bryan Habana, 10 Morné Steyn, 9 Ruan Pienaar, 8 Duane Vermeulen, 7 Willem Alberts, 6 Francois Louw, 5 Juandré Kruger, 4 Eben Etzebeth, 3 Jannie du Plessis, 2 Adriaan Strauss, 1 Tendai Mtawarira.
Replacements: 16 Bismarck du Plessis, 17 Gurthrö Steenkamp, 18 Coenie Oosthuizen, 19 Flip van der Merwe, 20 Siya Kolisi, 21 Jano Vermaak, 22 Pat Lambie, 23 Jan Serfontein.

  • Our backline looked great with Du Preez on, crisp, fast service. We need to get him back in SA

  • How does such a stupid contractual quirk like that even come about? Seriously it has to be about the dumbest thing I have ever heard.

  • Heard on the radio this morning Jano gonna start in the place of Pienaar…. Anyone know anything about that?

  • Good team that.

Very happy Jano is there on the bench.

Only change I would have made is Coenie to reserve 1 and Lourens to reserve 3. Gurthro dropped.

  • @lostfish (Comment 6) : Some days it’s Bulls, other days it’s Sharks. I’ve lost track of where Uli Opidraad is this week

  • I think it would be more fair if Bizzie got to start , its his 50th test, and lets give Strauss a rest.. we need to know if Bizzie can give a commanding performance fromthe word go.

  • @Lassy_lion (Comment 3) : I certainly hope so.

@John Galt (Comment 4) : I completely agree. Gurthro was useless last week.

@The Duke (Comment 8) : I agree. I think for a player of his caliber to reach such a milestone from the bench is not nice. And besides, despite the “man of the match” performance (which I don’t think was the case at all) by Strauss last week, I still think Bissie is easily 10 times as valuable as Strauss. Also with Flo being a bit quiet, Bissie is the only other real fetcher in the team.

  • @The Duke (Comment 8) : Damn right. Though I don’t think we need to worry if he can produce a commanding performance as a starter. on the plus side he’ll probably be appointed captain again for last quarter.

  • @The Duke (Comment 8) :

    I respectfully disagree Duke.

If we were playign a rotation policy that would have legs, but we’re not.
As such Strauss is the man in the hotseat and he’s been fantastic for the last couple of seasons.

Bismarck needs to unseat him, or wait until he gets injured. Its as straight-forward as that.

  • @The Duke (Comment 8) :

Anyway, since when does “fair” come into with regards to Springbok selection policy?

  • @The Duke (Comment 8) : Sentimentality has no place in sport. It might be Bismark’s 50th test but he now needs to prove he deserves the starting berth. Strauss has been fantastic. The competition is great for the Boks.

  • Just read Jake White’s ‘warning’ to SA Rugby… I sadly agree with him. We shouldn’t be fielding any foreign players.
