THe Sharks have made a few rotational changes to the team that beat the Cheetahs in Bloemfontein last week, to host the Bulls at Kings Park this Saturday evening.

Amongst the forwards, Craig Burden gets a start ahead of Kyle Cooper as the only change in the front row. In the second row, Peet Marais has played his way into the squad, dropping Edwin Hewitt to the bench. The loose trio is unchanged from last week. Jacques Botes will continue as captain even though Keegan Daniel is in the squad.

Cobus Reinach gets his first start of the Currie Cup season, linking up with Fred Zeilinga, who gets his second start. The only other change to the backline is the return to fitness of Odwa Ndungane, with Sizo Maseko dropping out of the match 22 altogether.

Changes to the bench see Tera Mthembu drops out of the match 22 altogether and Justin Downey getting his first chance of the season.

Sharks: 15. SP Marais, 14. Odwa Ndungane, 13. Louis Ludik, 12. Heimar Williams, 11. Lwazi Mvovo, 10. Fred Zeilinga, 9. Cobus Reinach, 8. Jacques Botes, 7. Jean Deysel, 6. Keegan Daniel, 5. Marco Wentzel, 4. Peet Marais, 3. Wiehahn Herbst, 2. Craig Burden, 1. Dale Chadwick.

Reserves: 16. Kyle Cooper, 17. Rayno Gerber, 18. Edwin Hewitt, 19. Justin Downey, 20. Charl McLeod, 21. Butch James, 22. Jaco van Tonder

  • Good team! With three full backs – Marais, Ndugane and Ludik, we’ll be solid under the up and unders.

  • Thats a pretty solid side. Only concern is Burden’s lineout throwing as you cannot concede first phase possession against that Bulls side. Bulls youngsters will make mistakes if Sharks put pressure on them but if our defense sits back like they have tended to do this season we will get torn apart.

  • Whitehead still injured?
    Hope so, it worries me they are still playing Ludik there when he more than likely wont be around in the next few months.

    @SheldonK (Comment 2) :
    Both Cooper and Burden still struggle with the essential hooking aspects. They are both great in the tight loose but their pure hooking skills need work. They are both young and will get better and better though.

  • @Poisy (Comment 3) : Pretty sure Tera is still recovering from the injury he picked up in the Cheetahs game.

  • Tera is recovering from injury, so his exclusion is explained.

    I like the fact that Zeilinga is starting again, as well as Marais getting a run.

  • @John Galt (Comment 4) : Yeh look there is massive potential there but a lot of people put big emphasis on a hooker’s ability with ball in hand and at ruck time. For me those are secondary. A hooker must be able to hit his lineout jumpers and hook the ball in the scrum and if they cant do that then they are useless to me as a hooker. Rather play flank or prop.

  • Pleased to see Cobus Reinach starting. Hopefully Lwazi is on his game this Saturday. Quick ball played wide and more players at the breakdown faster will send this Bulls team back to Pretoria to a very cold reception!

  • Reinach and Zelinga together, that has the makings of a very bad day for the Bulls

  • I hate that we’re playing the bulls after the trouncing that they received. Our boys had better harden up, the bulls won’t take a spanking like that lying down. They’ll be out for blood.
