  • Decidedly average Bok team with a particularly conservative game-plan against a weak-as-piss Australian team who’ll only win by virtue of the “travel factor” & refereeing decisions going the way of the home team. Yawn.

I hope I’m wrong and we have an exciting test ahead, but I’m looking forward to the Currie Cup more than this one…

  • I’m glad to say I was wrong. It wasn’t sterling, nor was it stirring in terms of game plan – but it was rather convincing and well executed. The Australians were abysmal and gave up totally after 70 minutes. Clancy was inconsistent – but still a huge improvement on Steve Walsh and his RUI performance in our last match – Refereeing Under the Influence.

Well done Boks. I eat my words – with pleasure.

  • Comment 83, posted at 07.09.13 14:50:52 by SeanyJMc Reply

  • @McLovin (Comment 81) : Today was the first time HM achieved anything with the Boks to set himself apart and well done to him.

From today onwards, we’ll be looking at him in a different light, as long as the Boks results keep on improving.

Hopefully we can beat the AB’s next week, but judging HM’s improvement graph, that one can wait ’till next year.

The next milestone will be to win the rest of our home games (which will probably mean winning the Championship, which will be quite big).

  • @fyndraai (Comment 95) : You forget this is a sharks website and Meyer is a former Bulls coach who picks Morne above the blue eyed boy. Even though more Sharks in the team than current Bulls.

Granted one feels he made mistakes last year ala Greyling and Potgieter, but it was quickly rectified. I myself don’t like Kirchner, but he fits in.

Nine wins in a row? Historic win? What about RC title? The cork will remain closed here until end of year tour, if that is also successful, it would probably be just luck. 🙂

But I have to say the AB are a totally different kettle of fish. There is no such thing as a weak AB team. We are still underdogs.

  • I have now watched the game 3 times, the first time was on Saturday night when I already knew the result so there was complete focus on who was doing what and an absence of emotion that often clouds my take on the game. Sometimes the game I see the second time is very different especially if the Sharks or Boks are playing. Got to hand it to Meyer. Kirchner came off, great display at full back. The centres worked well, I wasn’t sure of JJ, always thought the likes of de Jong were unlucky. I am now a Willie le Roux fan and we don’t seem to be missing a fit Brussow. But that was Australia and at their current level you can’t right off Argentina next weekend. We will see how really good we are if we can beat the Kiwis or even hold them to within 7 points. My concerns are as follows, although the tight five played as good as I have seen them, a second division club team would give the Aussie front row a good go, Flip did give away far too many penalties. But my biggest concern is Steyn his defence wasn’t very good a lot of guys covered for him. The No 10 channel will be worked by NZ. He missed a reasonably easy kick at poles so he is not at his best yet. He never crosses the gain line and was indecisive on a few occasions with ball in hand, NZ will make you pay. But apart from the kicking for poles he has never been strong around the field. What is cause for grave concern is that a number of his kicks were aimless and literally just a turnover, it was only poor play that stopped the Aussies from punishing us. NZ will punish us.

Perhaps the corks will only come off when HM is coach no more.

It’s all a little overly parochial though. The -world appendage suggests more open-mindedness. More inclusion.

  • @fyndraai (Comment 99) : I think most of the knowledgeable Sharks supporters on this site respect HM, we might not be fans of his style of rugby. It has been successful so far but the real test will be next weekend. I for one am very pleased with the result as we all want the Boks to shine no matter who the coach is. I am not “popping corks” just yet. We beat a very poor Wallaby side on Saturday, I reserve judgement on the strength of the Boks until we come up against the World Champs. We all got very excited when the Boks crushed the Argentinians, look what happened the following week. Does everyone have such short memories?

Steyn is not the ideal man to have at 10, but he is the best we have at this moment.

Let’s see by next year this time, if Goosen, Zeilinga, Boshoff or Pollard can put their hands up enough to justify their place above Steyn.

  • @Blue Centurion (Comment 103) : Zane does fit in perfectly and I can’t fault his selection. IMO Willie and Habs are able to play with their natural flair and because of the dependability that guys like Zane and Morne bring. Gives them some room to make the odd mistake without having too much of an impact. Realistically in test match rugby we can’t have 10 through 15 all with the license to thrill. I’m pretty sure thats what the aussies just tried to do.

  • I don’t think these ABs are that good. Least not nearly as good as last year’s team or the one that won the WC.
They are as ripe for the taking as the Wallabees.

If the Boks lose, it won’t be by much, and it won’t be because they are a better team. The primary reason for a Bok loss will be because it’s the 2nd week of a tour and there will be an inevitable low after the high.

The Boks will beat them in the home match for sure.

  • @gregkaos (Comment 110) :

Ludik is way down in the pecking order, giving him a cap just to see something that’s already known is a waste. SR is where players should prove themselves.

In the current Bok squad, there are Kirchner, le Roux, Lambie and Pienaar. All competent fullbacks. Outside the current squad, there is Frans Steyn when healthy or Gio Aplon.

  • @fyndraai (Comment 112) : Pienaar a competent fullback? Pass the pipe!

He’s been shocking every time he’s played there.

  • I would have thought Ludik would have ticked pretty much all of Meyer’s boxes as a fullback. Sure, he doesn’t have le Roux’s electrifying pace or step, but he’s safe as houses on defence, while still able to join the line effectively. Really not sure why he never got a look-in.
