Poor show as under 21s are bested

Unlike the under 19s before them, who won unexpectedly at Ellis Park on Friday, the highly-rated Sharks under 21 side punched well below their weight in succumbing to a 39-31 defeat to the Lions.

Starting the round well positioned on the log, the Sharks, strengthened in several key areas, needed a win to cement second place on the log. Rather than capitalising, though, they capitulated tamely, allowing the Lions to score five tries against just three of their own; worse, they failed to even pick up a losing bonus point for finishing within seven.

While a few men did stand up to be counted on the Sharks side, the feeling is that there simply wasn’t enough commitment shown, particularly on defence; the coaching staff will need to do a fair bit of thinking over the coming bye weekend as they seek a combination that is able to deliver the sort of performance on grass that the names on paper warrant. Quite honestly, last week wasn’t good enough and with the talent in this Sharks under 21 squad, we really do need to see significantly better results.

The Sharks’ tries were scored by wing Alcino Isaacs, prop Allan Dell and flanker Dylan Nel.

Lions (39): Tries Damian Engledoe, Harold Vorster, Jacques Nel, Marais Schmidt, Stephan de Wit. Conversions Schmidt (4). Penalties Schmidt (2).
Sharks (31): Tries Alcino Isaacs, Allan Dell, Dylan Nel. Conversions Robert du Preez , Duncan Campbell. Penalties du Preez (4).
