A number of fringe players from the Springboks squad have been released to their provinces for Currie Cup duty this weekend.
Franco van der Merwe and Jean de Jongh, neither of whom joined the Boks on tour, have nonetheless been “re-released” for duty, meaning they remain available to the Lions and Western Province respectively for this weekend’s games. Of the players that did tour, only Marcell Coetzee (Sharks), Bjorn Basson (Blue Bulls) and Piet van Zyl (Cheetahs) will be allowed game time.
In the case of Van Zyl, his exclusion amounts to a dropping from the squad, since Fourie du Preez is once more available to the Boks. It’s thus unlikely that van Zyl’s name will be called when the squad for the remaining home tests in the Rugby Championship is named on Sunday. The balance of the tour group will assemble in Cape Town on Friday ahead of that announcement; my assumption is that those released this week should probably expect to be available to their Currie Cup sides for the remainder of the season.

Awesome. We could really use Marcell and he can really use the game time.
just what we (don’t) need…. another loose forward 🙂
@robdylan (Comment 2) : Oh too true. Ok well Marcell needs the game time! 😉
@gregkaos (Comment 3) : don’t et me wrong – I’m super pleased to have him back. Just not sure’ what they’re going to do with him.
@robdylan (Comment 4) : Give Botes a rest and Daniels to captain maybe?
@gregkaos (Comment 5) : that’s exactly what I think will happen
Hmm so Marcell in, does that mean captaincy back to Daniel and Botes dropped? Or is Deysel given a rest. Interestign times. I also think Downey needs a start. So Coetzee,Deysel,Downey starting for me. Cant do worse!
Deysel can do with a rest.
@gregkaos (Comment 5) : good call 🙂
Hrmm. Adriaanse not been released? Can only imagine that Heyneke wants spend more time integrating him into the Boks or is thinking of using him against Aussies?
@gregkaos (Comment 10) : Well both Gurthro and Coenie were pretty poor on the weekend so hope he does use him. The Boks do have prop depth- unfortunately they all in the UK and France
@robdylan (Comment 2) : @gregkaos (Comment 5) : I agree but KD at 8 and Captain,have we all lost our memory as well as minds
I feel like van zyl should have stayed in favour of vermaak. Piet is the younger player and could have gained a lot from another week or so with veteran du preeze.
I would probably rather drop KD and keep Botes as captain. So Botes, Deysel, Coetzee with KD on the bench as a impact player – his best position imo.
