There were, unfortunately, two serious injuries for Griquas against the Sharks this weekend and we’d like to take this opportunity to wish the players in question a full and swift recovery.

Fullback PJ Vermeulen’s ankle fracture in the 12th minutes was quite clearly caught on camera and I’m sure I wasn’t alone in really appreciating his pain, as his cries of agony were picked up by the touch-line microphone. He was, alas, not the only man to suffer a leg fracture in the game, with new lock recruit Victor Kruger also breaking his leg around the half hour mark, thus once again plunging Griquas into a second-row crisis ahead of this weekend’s match at Newlands.

Wasn’t it great to see how the Sharks medical staff, led by Dr Alan Kourie, rolled up their sleeves to help out when Vermeulen went down, proving once and for all that the Hippocratic oath (and common human decency) really does go a lot deeper than the team colours they may wear?

Our hearts go out to both PJ and Victor – manne, julle bly altwee in ons gedagtes en gebede!

  • @R Hayward (Comment 1) : I’ll be honest – my enjoyment of the game stopped at that point. I just wanted it to end.

  • @robdylan (Comment 3) : The kwaste is the 1 team that cannot afford injuries at this point in the season! Even thought they beat us, I still want to see the ouens do well against some other big teams in CC.

  • That poor kid was in serious pain. See how his team mate cradled his head and put his hand over his mouth to muffle his cries of pain? Get well soon fella and we’ll shout for you on the park again against WP or the Bulls!)

  • @robdylan (Comment 3) : Was it me or did it seem like the whole game changed after that first incident? I think the players on both the Sharks and Kwas were seriously affected mentally after that.
