Rest for Botes this week

The Sharks have confirmed that captain Jacques Botes will be rested for this weekend’s game against the Cheetahs.

Marcell Coetzee, released form the Springbok squad, will clearly enjoy game time in Botes’ stead, with Keegan Daniel likely to reclaim the captaincy and probably the number 8 jersey as well.

Botes needs just a cap or two (sources differ on the exact details) in order to eclipse Helgaard Muller’s record for most career Currie Cup games, but it seems he’ll need to hang on another week or two to achieve that notable milestone.

  • Surely Downey must get game time or whats the point of having him there? Same with Van Tonder? If you gonna pick a guy in the 22 then play him otherwise rather pick another forward.

  • I would give Deysel a rest along with Botes and play Mtembu as well. Making the loose forwards:
    6. Daniel (c)
    7. Coetzee
    8. Mtembu
    19. Downey/Deysel
