The Golden Lions have signed former Junior Springbok and current Leopards lock MB Lusaseni after he had quite an impressive season in the First Division Currie Cup.

He has signed a two year contract with the Lions and will join the union at the beginning of 2014.

More good news for the Lions is that line-out giant Franco van der Merwe has also signed for another two years. He was impressive for the Sharks during this year’s Super 15 and they were surely interested to win him over. He decided to sign with the Lions though. Another player that signed is the winger/centre Lionel Mapoe who was on loan at the Bulls for the Super 15.

Meanwhile the Lions are busy preparing for their clash against the Blue Bulls this weekend at Ellis Park, where they will desperately looking for a win to keep up with the top of the log teams.

News out of the camp is that impressive loose forward Willie Britz will most likely not play due to a bit of a stiff neck, but will be back the following week. Lock Ruan Venter injured his knee and will most likely be out for the remainder of the season. This leaves Lions coach Johan Ackermann to do some thinking for the weekend because of a shortage of locks available for the Lions team.

More worrying will be the injury to Robert De Bruyn who broke his ankle in the game against the Cheetahs. De Bruyn came into the team because of a whole string of injuries at centre for the Lions with the Likes of Alwyn Hollenbach, Stokkies Hanekom, Lionel Mapoe and Deon van Rensburg all still out with injuries.

Some positive for Lions see Chrysander Botha likely to make his return after being out with injury for the last couple of weeks. This may mean the Likes of Andries Coetzee or even maybe Marnitz Boshoff taking the centre position this week.

The Lions beat the Blue Bulls in the last round of the competition 62-23. Ackermann will have some head scratching to do if they want to repeat that impressive performance….

  • I hope Ruan Venter has got his degree in order, the oke has had 3 season ending injuries over the past 3 seasons

  • @robdylan (Comment 9) : The mind boggles, or am I overreacting, but to my mind purposefully pushing your studs into someones face deserves a hell of a lot more than 1 week.

And the Griqua lock got 6 weeks for not biting – crazy.

  • @Baylion (Comment 13) : We are building a nice squad for the Super Rugby…. Hope the injuries dont screw us again….

  • @Lassy_lion (Comment 14) : The problem is that the bulk of the players are inexperienced at Super Rugby level. Against WP 16 of the players had a combined 41 Super Rugby caps with 9 rookies

  • The biggest problem facing the Lions in Super Rugby is their defense. They can score tries and points but if they dont put a massive focus on their defense then they will have big problems again.

  • @Baylion (Comment 15) : If we can just have 5 or 6 experienced guys to lead the team I think we will do ok….

  • @SheldonK (Comment 16) : You are 100% right. We need a good defence coach

  • Comment 18, posted at 18.09.13 09:43:37 by Mutley Reply
  • @SheldonK (Comment 16) : For sure…. Our defence suck and is a BIG problem… But some of our big defenders are missing… If we can take a backline to Super Rugby with the following members I think we will be ok with defence…
    9. Bondesio
    10. Jantjies
    11. Coetzee
    12. Hollenbach
    13. Stokkies
    14. Deon van Rensburg
    15. Marnitz Boshoff

We can even put Volmink and Combrinck in there… These guys are all good on defence… We rather have these guys injured now then at the begining of S15 again.
I will never say we will reach semi’s next year but I surely think we can at least not be the last SA team and then we will keep most of our players and build on the experiance….

  • @Lassy_lion (Comment 19) : Thats a pretty usefull backline. Defense plays a major role in Super rugby, particularly on turnovers. If the Lions can shore up their defense they will become a very tough team to play. But at the moment Super Rugby teams know that they will score points against the Lions so if they can prevent Lions from scoring they know they will win.
