The Sharks under 19 side cemented second place on the tournament log thanks to a bonus point 26-22 victory over the Free State under 19 side at Kings Park on Saturday.

Flyhalf Jean-Luc du Plessis scored 14 points, from a try and two penalties, to extend his lead at the top of the individual points scoring table, but as has been the case all year, it was a solid team effort from Deon Kayser’s men that saw them take the points.

The Sharks lead 18-7 at half time, courtesy of first-half tries to centre Nkululeko Marwana, lock Hendrik Botha and du Plessis himself, with the flyhalf adding a penalty to make some amends for three missed conversions. The visitors battled strongly back and outscored their hosts by 15 points to 8 in the second period; replacement back Wion Robbertse scoring a late try to seal the victory for his team after two tries from Free State had seen them briefly take the lead.

The Sharks under 19s have a home game against the Leopards this week, before tricky back-to-back fixtures against the log-leading Blue Bulls (away) and Western Province (at home).

Sharks under 19 (26): Tries Legend Marwana, Jean-Luc du Plessis, Hendrik Botha, Wion Robbertse. Penalties du Plessis (2).
Free State under 19 (22): Tries Donavan Gissing, Jan Venter, Nicolaas Lee. Conversions Pieter Jordaan, Warren Potgieter. Penalty Jordaan.

  • These boys impress me more with each week they play. What role will Kayser play once the Bulls guy comes in next year?

  • @Argex (Comment 1) : pretty sure Anthony hasn’t been contracted as an under 19 coach

  • @Argex (Comment 3) : look, they haven’t said for sure either way…. but my understanding is he’s coming in for a gig with the seniors.

  • He’ll join the seniors. Brendon won’t be as hands on next year.
