Oh dear – what now?

Time to raise the inevitable point. While the elevation of Pieter-Steph du Toit to the Bok squad is great news for the player, it does once again expose a short-term lack of second-row depth in Sharks country.

With du Toit gone – and Marco Wentzel and Anton Bresler both injured – the Sharks are now in the unenviable position of having only two fit locks in the squad. While Peet Marais and Edwin Hewitt are both in good form, the primary concern is that neither of them has yet worn the number 5 jersey in this competition, with the associated responsibility of making the line-out calls. Of the two, Marais is clearly the man to be entrusted with that task this weekend, but a big step up will be required form the young man, who has at least played in the position for the Vodacom Cup side.

Equally concerning is the absence of a lock to sit on the bench and while the Sharks wouldn’t be the first team this year to be forced to pick a tall loose forward in the number 18 jersey, it does highlight an area of alarming “shallowness” in a squad otherwise noted for its depth. The smart money would be on a return to the match 22 for both Jean Deysel and Jacques Botes, with the former designated lock backup if required.

The other option would be to call up Sharks under 21 lock Stephan Lewies. The former Eldoraignean has been in good nick for Etienne Fynn’s team and is a natural number 5 to boot.

  • Slightly away from the main point here, but if PSD doesn’t get selected for the match 22 against Australia it will result in a crazy situation IMO. Hope that won’t be the case though!

  • Was wondering where Jean Deysel was – to me he’s a natural choice as is Botes. They not injured are they?

  • What about Brendan Venter or JS calling in a Saracens favour & borrow Ali Hargreaves temporarily? Maybe Sykes the sin-bin king could be considered? History has made a mockery out of the Sharks commercial retention of notably, locks. Gerhard Mostert,Hargreaves,Marais,Steenkamp,Sykes,Johan Muller & it goes on.Deysel isn’t really comfortable @ lock & neither is Alberts. Have we tried using Brynard Stander? ❓

  • Our locks keep leaving. Is that our fault? I’m not sure, but every time we get a few new guys n a couple leaves for greener pastures.

Juandre Marais could have stayed. With the way our locks drop like flies, he would have gotten a decent chance sooner or later.

  • I think it is time to either take from the u21s or a club players. Other teams have had to do it and its the Sharks own fault for letting so many locks leave of late. Sykes,Skeate,Muller,Hargreaves,Mostert,Marais.

  • We’re also severely lacking in loose-head props. Give the u21s a crack – if they’re clearly not ready, then at least we know to recruit ahead of SupeRugby.

Meyer clearly has a thing for PSdT – bordering on the obsessive.
